PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Term 3 September
NAPLAN results
Our school's NAPLAN results have been released. We have shown improvement in several of the categories, but the one that stands out the most is Reading. This year our school embarked on a 3-5 year strategy that is focussed on improving our students' reading skills and comprehension. Throughout 2016, the school has had almost 20 staff trained in the "Reading to Learn" program. These teachers have been implementing strategies across their classes, and are to be congratulated on the work they have done. Our students have certainly responded, and are realising the power of reading for themselves. I would also like to recognise the Year 7 and 9 students who have put so much effort into achieving such strong results. Congratulations Maleny High!
School Expo
We had a great turn-out of parents and students who came along to our annual School Expo where they had a wonderful opportunity to gather information about subject choices for next year. The Year 8 cohort is currently leading the way with the number of completed and signed subject forms. Just a reminder to all parents and students that these forms are due on/before Friday, 9 September. Thank you to all of the Maleny High staff who were on-hand to answer questions from parents and build informative and eye-catching displays of student and faculty work.

QCST
As this edition goes to print our Year 12 students will have sat the QSCT – two days of tests. These days are very important for students wishing to gain an OP rank. I know we all wish our Year 12s good luck in answering as many questions as they can. Mr Mills organised a breakfast for our students. Thanks to the team of HODs and teachers who have implemented the QCS preparation program this year. This is a very vital component of Senior study as our teachers guide students through the preparation for these exams.
District Athletics Carnival Success!
Congratulations to Spencer Doneman (Year 8) who was recognised as age champion for boys aged 14 years at our recent district athletics carnival. He will now go on to compete in the regional carnival and the school wishes him all the very best. Out of 10 schools, Maleny came 7th overall when percentages were calculated. This is a tremendous result for a small school. Thank you to all of the teachers who have worked with our students to prepare and organise them for this event.
Golden Gloves Winner
I was contacted by the Golden Gloves Boxing Association and informed that Hayden Law (Year 9) has won the Light Heavy Weight division. He is an Australian champion - what a remarkable and extraordinary effort! Any student who reaches the level of National Finals, and wins, has obviously put a lot of time and effort into their sport. Congratulations Hayden!
Sakura Study Tour
Over 20 girls and boys from Japan's Sakura district recently arrived for a week-long study tour. This is the 14th year that our school has hosted Sakura and it is the ongoing support of our home stay families, and the students who volunteer to be study buddies, that enable Maleny High to continue to offer this wonderful opportunity.

10 year Facilities Plan
At our last P&C meeting I asked for interested parents to walk with me around the school to look at ways we can improve the school environment. The times I am making myself available for parents will be Saturday, September 10 from 9am, or Monday, September 12 from 4.30pm, or Tuesday September 13 from 7.30am. I'm hoping that these times will allow as many parents as possible to contribute their ideas and vision. Any interested parent is invited to come and dream with me as I will use your suggestions to develop the school's 10 year Facilities Plan. I am also wanting to look at funding grants to help support our dreams too! I will work through the Year Level Coordinators to get student input on this matter as well.
Kylen Skipper
I would like to announce that one of our School Captains, Kylen Skipper, is featured on the Think Your Way website at the following address.

Until next newsletter, stay safe and well!

- All year 12 students have been requested to make a Futures Interview with Connie Robins, in order to ensure future options are being investigated and informed decisions being made. During this meeting, the student's QCE predicted points are totalled, and their SET Plan Review takes place. It is an important meeting. Please ensure and encourage your student to attend their interview. Parents are always welcome to attend as well!

HUMANITIES NEWS
Year 12 Geography Camp
Our Senior Geography students braved the elements to experience the breathtaking beauty of bushwalking through Lamington National Park.
On their last field trip for Senior Geography, 35 of our year 12 students were treated to a memorable three days in the picture perfect surrounds of Binna Burra Lodge. Students bonded in the brisk August weather to work on the Field Trip Booklet, which was an essential element of their assessment program.
With the ever-present threat of rain looming students trekked close to 40 kilometres over the three days through the unique landscape, identifying the various types of landforms, forests and grasslands. The fauna also made an appearance with resident paddymelons and a goanna saying hello. Luckily the cold weather kept the snakes at bay.
One student noted that Surprise Rock, with its 360° views of the Lamington National Park, was one of the special memories she will be taking away from the gruelling trek. Spirits were lifted though, with fun activities such as the exhilarating night time trek where cries of laughter and excitement echoed through the valley. If the screaming didn't keep the scary animals away, the stench of students after trekking for three days certainly did.
Students had the immense pleasure of being accompanied by: Mr Jon O'Connell, Mr Mike Railton and Ms Ashleigh Ebenezer. Access to these knowledgeable practitioners and the National Park Rangers ensured that students not only came away with a valuable social experience, but also vital insight into the planning considerations experts need in order to foster sustainable development.
Congratulations Year 12s. You are now part of the exclusive club that is Maleny SHS's Binna Burra Alumni.

YEAR 8 HUMANITIES
In term 3, 2016 the year 8s started studying The Spanish Conquest of the Americas. So far we have learnt that the Aztec empire period is from 1400ce-1500ce and was invaded, as well as destroyed, by Hernan Cortes. We have also learnt that the Aztecs made and some pretty cool inventions and discoveries, for example: chocolate, corn, rubber, suspension bridges, pyramids and the sewage system.
Another important aspect we were educated about was the Spanish Conquistadors and the cruelties the Native Americans had to endure. We also studied The Three Gs; gold, glory and God, which were the main reason conquistadors went out in search of the New World. When the Spanish arrived in the New World they brought many diseases such as small pox, which wiped out half of the Aztecs in a year and helped Hernan Cortes destroy the empire.
At Expo Night this year we got to display the Aztec masks we created as a fun project to show all the parents that what we have learned so far this term has been really interesting, fun and informative.

Year 7 Interschool Sport
Students are in the middle of their interschool competition for Term Three. Our Maleny students are working well together in their teams and are producing some great results! Games will be played every Thursday right up until the second last day of school this term (15th Sept). Students in year 8 & 9 are training hard and working on skills during their Sport lesson on a Wednesday afternoon. Students will continue to train for the rest of the term and will start the interschool competition early in Term 4. FROM THE P & C
Dear Parents and Carers
Once again, the year is fast disappearing! It's been a busy one for our P and C with a few changes and new projects on the go. Last weekend we had a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, which is a wonderful opportunity for us to raise funds for our school. Thank you to all helpers on the day and to Bunnings for their support. On Saturday 24th September, we have the chance to raise some more funds, simply by serving at the canteen at Green Park Bike Day. Please call me with your offers of help – the more helpers, the more we earn as we are paid for our labour. This is a fun and easy way to contribute to your school. And why are we raising funds?? Well, the P and C was informed, via a school questionnaire last year, that the students would like several improvements around our school grounds. The top 3 identified were: lockers; more seating; and chilled bubblers. So this is our challenge – to assist the school in facilitating these goals. Obviously these are all expensive purchases and that's where we need your help. Remember, if you are unable to assist at fundraisers, we are always willing to accept financial contributions instead. Imagine if everyone just donated $50 per year to the P and C instead of having to work at various events – that would exceed what we raise and give us a fantastic edge toward purchasing the things students want to see at their school.
On another note, we look forward to our new Uniform Shop opening on site sometime in October. While we continue to sell uniforms from the canteen on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, and via Flexi School online ordering, we are looking forward to our new facility, which will have a change room and much better display, storage and access. We have received our new stock of navy blue hoodies, without a school logo so they can be worn elsewhere. They are available for sale right now. We are proud to say that our range of stock for uniforms is widening so that we have all our students dressed proudly in our school uniform and colours. The uniform shop stocks a range of shorts, long pants and hoodies in navy blue, and of course, our school shirts. New stock is due in toward the end of the year. It's great to see many of our students wearing the uniform so well.
We have had some changes to our Canteen staff over the last 6 months. Kate Lanphier (Dylan and Nakita's mum) is our new Coordinator, along with Lorraine Bundersen (Aaron's mum) and Alison Kemp as assistants. We are also lucky to have Fiona Wilson (Jordan's mum) as one of our awesome volunteers. The ladies in the canteen are always after helpers if you have some spare time. They have done an amazing job over the past month (when our cold room died a chilling death,) keeping the canteen fully operational under difficult circumstances. Thank you ladies! The repair of the cold room was a huge outlay for our P and C ($6000), so again our fundraising opportunities become very important. I look forward to seeing you at our next one. Also, please take this as a personal invitation to join us at our next P and C meeting. We meet the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6pm. Meetings are over by 8pm (as yes, I have children to get home to, too!) These meetings are very friendly and informative and a fantastic way to find out what's going on at school and to contribute to the direction of the school.
Kind regards
Mary Sullivan

COMMUNITY NOTICES
SALVATION ARMY CAMPAIGN FOR HOMELESSNESS
I am writing to invite your school to join us in the fight against youth homelessness. The Salvation Army has launched a new campaign, The Couch Project, which aims to raise money for, and awareness of, youth homelessness in Australia.
The most recent census revealed there are over 44,000 homeless young people (aged under 25) in Australia on any given night. However only 6% of them are sleeping rough on the streets. The single most dominant form of youth homelessness is Couch Surfing and we must address the unique dangers this presents.
Young adults can organise a sleep-over or sleep on their couch with sponsorship to raise money for The Salvation Army Youth Programs on Friday, 16th September.
We would appreciate your support.
