PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 4 November

Dear Parents,

We have reached the mid-point of the term and, depending on the year level of your young person/s, exams for the last time this year are on their way. Please remind your child that preparing well, and doing their personal best, is all that is important. If everyone was to do this, I am confident that our students will meet their goals and experience success.

Colours of Love

In Week One of this term, our Arts Faculty were hard at work preparing, rehearsing and performing. Over 240 primary school students came to a matinee session. Both evening sessions were also very well attended. Thank you to our wonderful Arts staff for their commitment to providing opportunities for our young people to learn, achieve and excel. Thank you to Ms Cath Gray for her leadership of this event.

Senior Leaders

Our Student Leaders for 2017 have been decided and announced at our school’s recent Presentation Night. This year applicants for School Captain were outstanding. Thanks to Ms Edwards, Lachlan White and Amity Thiele for their help on the interview panel. Students and staff also had the opportunity to cast their votes. It was incredibly close and, for this reason, in 2017 the school will have six school captains. I have already met with them, and I’m impressed with their eagerness to make next year (our 30th anniversary) a year to remember.

Presentation Night

This year’s Presentation Evening, was one to remember. Our very capable school captains, Evie Barnes, Amity Thiele, Kylen Skipper and Lachlan White compered the evening, demonstrating the brilliant young people that they are. We enjoyed the very talented Moriah Hudson and Oskar Campbell as they sung a duet, and our dancers performed an item from Colours of Love. I would like to thank the staff who worked hard to put the night together. The staging, certificates, gifts and shields were of a very high standard. The team was led by Mrs Masson, who was ably assisted by Ms Heidi Wegert and a team of people. Thank you to everyone who was involved in making this evening one to remember.

Leadership Camp

Mrs Edwards organised this year’s Year eleven Leadership Camp at the Currimundi Recreational Centre. Students learnt many life lessons from the activities that the campsite had to offer, such as: team work, leadership, encouragement, bravery and how to support others. Students were taken out of their comfort zones by challenging themselves with high ropes, caving and stand-up paddle boarding activities – just to name a few. Thank you to Ms Edwards and the Year Eleven students for making this a special camp.

End of year

We will soon farewell our Year Twelve students in a special edition of the school newsletter. Our next edition will focus upon the Formal, Graduation, leadership changeover information, and contain pictures. Our Year Twelve students finish on Friday, 18 November. The following week our Year Eleven and Year Ten students finish up too.

This year we are starting to prepare our Year Ten students to assume the responsibility that the Senior Schooling required by running a Year Ten Exam Block. Mr McIntosh will send families and students more information in the very near future. Year Ten and Year Eleven Exam Blocks will occur during Week Eight (from 22 to 25 November).

Until the next edition, stay safe.

Regards
Deborah Stewart

Tips to Help your Student to Manage Exam Stress:

It's the time of the year when students come up against the end of year exams. Particularly for senior students, this end of the year time can be the cause of debilitating stress & anxiety. However, there are ways around this.

(a) Encourage a Positive Home Environment: Help to organise study time as a quiet time in the home, when everyone is doing a quiet activity.
(b) Planning: Help your student to set up a home study time, perhaps using a study timetable to stay on track.
(c) Study Tips: Encourage your student to have a clean & organised area to study in. Put mobiles on flight mode or turn them off for the duration of study. Research shows that it is more effective to revise by hand writing notes rather than typing them.
(d) Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Provide regular, healthy meals & snacks. The brain needs complex carbohydrates & protein to operate effectively. Set aside regular time for exercise or physical activity. Get enough sleep - research has found that young people need approximately 8 hours sleep/night. Keep school & social life in balance.
(e) To help manage stress, it may be good to get the problem out in the air. Encourage your student to talk to someone about why they are stressed and what can be done about it.

FROM THE ARTS

Colours Of Love

What a way to start Term 4! Our first week back saw the Maleny SHS Arts collective production of “Colours of Love” at Maleny Community Centre. This production is a collaborative production showcasing the talents of our best arts students, and is the first production for our C.A.P.E. program (Collaborative Arts Performance Excellence). Integral to this production was the partnership with professional performer and script writer, Ben Adams. Ben is a recent graduate of W.A.A.P.A, and he created a highly creative, sophisticated and witty script around the theme of love in all its guises. Ben also worked with our students in realising this through performance. In addition, our C.A.P.E. technical team had the opportunity to work with Rose Parker, a professional sound technician and industry teacher from SAE Creative Industries College in Brisbane.

Of course, these productions don’t happen without the tireless efforts and creative input of our ARTS teachers. I would like to acknowledge Robyn Jones for her artistic vision for this project, and Natasha Collis and Ashleigh Ebenezer who took on the role of co-directors for the show and contributed countless hours and immense artistic energy to make this production so professional.

I would also like to acknowledge our music teachers: Liz Druitt, Karen White and Sarah Minns who are supporting amazing talent development in our musicians and vocalists. Contributing to the sophisticated and professional nature of the show was the fantastic graphic design and marketing, created by art teacher Shelly Le Vesconte. The talents of our Visual Arts students and teachers created fabulous backdrop images for the show, and our senior art teachers Helen Lyall and Arjan Murdoch nurture and support these talented artists, and are themselves, outstanding artists.

I would also like to acknowledge the support of our administration officers in selling tickets, and to the Maleny Community Centre for their incredible support in accommodating our production.

Look out for another exciting C.A.P.E production in 2017!

BYOD SPOTLIGHT

Students are continuing to connect their BYO Devices which is great to see. There are some exceptional offers being advertised for quality laptop computers by local providers, so it might be a great time to consider purchasing a laptop for your child.

A big shout out to the Year 11 students; where 53% of the grade have connected a device to the network. Those students will be well prepared for their Year 12 school work and assessment in 2017. This is an outstanding effort and I encourage the remainder of the Year 11 students to jump on board.

BYOD Benefits

Other than having their very own device, students enjoy a number of benefits for being involved in the BYOD program.

  1. An increased internet download quota at school
  2. They can personalise their device to suit their learning styles
  3. Easy access to their network drives and printing options when connected to the schools’ wifi.
  4. A free copy of Microsoft Office 2016 (click below to find out more)

https://malenyshs.eq.edu.au/Facilities/Computersandtechnology/Pages/Student-Advantage.aspx

Microsoft OneNote

Microsoft OneNote comes with the free version of Microsoft Office 2016 made available to students. It is an excellent program, designed specifically for taking notes and organising information. It is designed for students and education. The best thing is that it automatically saves your work! Below is a link to an interactive tutorial on how to use OneNote.

http://onenoteineducation.com/students

Please be aware that Education QLD has not enabled cloud storage (onedrive) for students or staff. Don’t worry, this is coming soon. You will need to save your Notebook to your computer.

BYOD Central

The Resource Centre has undergone some substantial structural renovations over the holidays. Classrooms within the Resource Centre have been provided with dedicated external access, which means our Library section of the Resource Centre is now a quiet and productive workspace.

We are looking to maximise this area by including collaborative learning areas that will encourage study groups, and a row of tables and comfy stools dedicated for individual work on laptops. This is a work in progress, so stay tuned for updates!

BYOD Program Registration Changes

There are some slight changes to the registration process. It is a more streamlined process now. Please consult the following website for details:

ENGLISH NEWS

Recently, Year 9 English studied the Fantasy and Science Fiction genres. Students looked at the textual elements of these stories, examples and then planned and created their own. Ariana Rew-Ramsey’s story is thought-provoking, utilises wonderful description and effectively captures the loneliness and isolation that some feel at being left behind. Please read it and enjoy it for yourself.

Galaxies Collide

The midnight sky drifts from Shine Ander’s consciousness for barely an instant, as galaxies intertwine beyond. Andromeda; shifting gravitationally towards her own milky way, crafting an infinite, whirling vortex of stars. Merely gravity to hold the world together, with time tearing it apart. Planets, stars, solar systems; all inevitably spinning towards the already crumbling world. Shine leans out her window, her pale, speckled skin clashing against the decaying wooden sill, as she contemplates life, fate and death, taking in her final moments on Earth before the long anticipated evacuation instigates. She often immersed in deep thought, envisioning how humanity would end, but now that death is looming, her mind struggled to grasp the imminent fatality of the galaxy’s collision.

The shadows of frightened minds swarm the streets below an unfamiliar skyline. Suspended among the obscure blackness, the solemn moon hangs low. The vast darkness ripples, as if withholding the entirety of its deepest secret. Shine’s toes extend further from the eroding timber floorboards, which ground her on Earth, hoping to catch a glance into the dark's veiled mysteries. The unstable floorboards beneath her fragile feet rumble like thunder, causing an unmeasurable extent of power. Shine’s quivering toes lose the vital grip with the only grounding surface saving her from inevitably falling towards the teeming swarm of frantic people below. Her wavy, auburn hair trailing slightly behind her motionless figure, ruthlessly plummeting to the ground. Thud! Shine falls hard against the still quaking earth; her body lay paralysed in tremor. Her consciousness only just comprehending the reality that gravity is shifting, the world is quaking and this… is the end.

A soft orange light slowly seeps through the corners of Shine’s gradually opening eyes. She shifts her weight to the palms of her shaking hands and pushes herself up; her body aching all-over. Scanning the horizon, crumbling buildings form a layer of distress amongst already frightened minds. The silent, unsettled atmosphere digs a crater in Shine’s stomach as the realisation of her aloneness sets in. Nothing but destruction, not a soul in sight. Shine looks toward the sky, pastel pinks and oranges array along the horizon, indicating the end of her last day on Earth. Her existence is solely dependent on making it to the evacuation centre before daylight diminishes.

Dread arises in her thoughts as she surges upwards onto her weak, aching feet, forcing every particle within her to persist onwards. The only sounds are of each throbbing footstep crunching against the rough terrain, and her own panicked breath, pushing herself to remain running, despite the impulse to collapse in agony. The evacuation centre falls closer and the tower’s dense iron doors begin to close, demolishing any chance of her survival. Shine’s heartbeat accelerates as she sprints towards the entrance. Time seems to screech to a halt as the fatal, concluding moments that will decide her fate unfold. Her arms tremble; reaching desperately to grasp hold of her only chance left at existence. As the final portion of oxygen, escapes the closing doors clutches. Shine extends her hand, slicing just the very edge of her finger between the doors. Shine jolts up, shocked. Her whole body floods with a numbing pain. Shine was alone, on this dying sphere that was once familiar, but is now merely a struggling stranger, collapsing amongst the stars.

Shine observes, from atop a crumbled mountain of wreckage, as the evacuation units depart skyward without her. Knowing that humanity will live on in her absence, she struggles to comprehend her fate, paralysed with fear for her future. She unconsciously wanders away from her demolished apartment building, an insignificant pile of rubble left to rot with the remainder of her crushed world. She senselessly strides towards the boundless blue ocean, which sways with the saline wind of fate. Unable to apprehend the reality of her destiny, Shine numbs to her surroundings. The icy salt water stings her ashen skin as she delves into the ocean, her paralysed figure hauntingly close to demise. Shine takes her last crucial breath, devouring her final thoughts before death consumes her soul. There is no place for her here, Earth is lifeless, her home crushed and her people live on without her.

SPORT NEWS

On Wednesday, 12 October, three of our senior female sporting ambassadors attended the ‘Women in Sport’ breakfast at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. Over 700 budding female athletes attended this wonderful event. Our Maleny students, Jazzy, Aimee and Jade had the pleasure of listening to three inspirational female athletes:

Clare Polkinghorne, co-captain of the Matilda’s football team
Maddison Keeney, bronze medal recipient for Diving at the Rio Olympic
Laura Clemesha, current Queensland Firebird player

This was a fantastic opportunity and I’m sure the girls have fond memories of this occasion.

Interschool Sport Update – Term 4

Year 7 Sport

Our energetic Year 7 students have begun their inter-class touch football competition during Thursday afternoon Sport. In week five the finals round will be held, and the winning class decided! After two weeks of competition there are some very close points between the classes and some great friendly competition is evident. Good luck to all classes!

From week six onwards, the second inter-class competition will commence in basketball. Please ensure your student comes to school in their full sports uniform on a Thursday so they can comfortably participate in these exciting competitions. With the weather warming up quickly, students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school every day and have it full before HPE and Sport lessons. School hats are mandatory, so please ensure your student has a suitable wide-brimmed hat at school every day.

Year 8 & 9 Sport

Both our Year 8 and 9 cohorts have now started the interschool competition for Term Four. It’s been great to see so many students coming to school in their sports uniform ready for Wednesday afternoon competition. However, this is a timely reminder that all students must have a school hat (wide-brimmed), wear appropriate running shoes (not Doc Martens) and be in their full sports uniform for Wednesday Sport. A full water bottle is strongly encouraged as well, as access to taps and bubblers is quite a distance away from the playing field/court at some venues. This competition will run right up until week 10, so please make sure your student is coming to school prepared for Sport. Teams that travel to other schools are always back at school by 3pm, so there is no need to make other arrangements to collect students. If your student is unwell or injured, but still attends school on a Wednesday, please make sure a note is provided for the coach of the team. Best of luck to all teams competing.

Representative Sport

One of our youngest Maleny students, Kirra Smith in Year 7, competed at the State Rugby League Carnival during the holidays. Kirra represented the Sunshine Coast region and we are very proud of her efforts. Well done Kirra.

Four of our budding athletes, Sam Dominiak, Spencer Doneman, Jill Green and Jazz Maher participated at the Queensland Track and Field Carnival last week. It’s never easy making it into a regional sporting team, but we certainly have some very talented sporting students at Maleny High. Great work team!

Sports Coordinator

TOURISM NEWS

On the holidays some Cert. 2 Tourism students and other Maleny High students chose to volunteer at the Caloundra Music Festival. We volunteered in areas such as The Green Team and the Funky Forest as Gate Attendants. We enjoyed ourselves meeting other volunteers and getting to know lots of different people around the festival. It was a great way to gain experience while having fun and listening to live music.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Lions Youth of the Year

The Lions Youth of the Year (YOTY) program aims to recognise and foster Leadership, Friendship, Personal Development, Citizenship, Sportsmanship and Public Speaking skills in young people aged 15 – 19. This program offers participants valuable personal rewards through friendship and also develops the incentive to pay greater attention to the general qualities that are vital in citizens.

http://lionsclubs.org.au/activities/youth/yoty/

This year, Lachlan White, School Vice-Captain and Year 12 student, represented Maleny State High School. Lachlan and his family were mentored and supported by members of the Maleny-Blackall Range Lions Club Inc. as he prepared his application and throughout the various components of the program.

During Term One Lachlan attended a Lions’ dinner where he presented a powerful speech, inviting the audience to consider a different perspective on drugs and media representations of those convicted of drug trafficking. He was also asked two impromptu questions about his thoughts on topical issues and current affairs, each requiring a response of around two minutes. Whilst many students fear the public speaking aspect of the program, it is important to realise that this is a very minor part of the overall process. Lachlan also completed an interview with members of the committee to learn more about his interests, qualities and achievements.

After this, Lachlan represented Maleny High at Regional Level conducting himself convincingly in a pool of similarly accomplished young people from around the Sunshine Coast area. The competition then progressed through various other stages, such as zone, district, state and national levels.

Our local Lions’ Club was so impressed with Lachlan’s conduct (and the information provided in his application) that they have offered him a Youth Exchange trip to New Zealand, including a Lions International Youth Camp at Rotorua from 27 December 2016 to 6 January 2017, with other young people from around the world. He will be departing on Saturday, 10 December.

http://www.lionsclubs.org.nz/How-Lions-Help/Youth/International-Youth-Camp

Lachlan will be speaking with the current Year 11 students about his YOTY experiences this year to encourage participation in next year’s program. If you’re a student in Year 10 or 11, think you meet the eligibility criteria and want to develop your citizenship skills and meet new people, then please see Mrs Fredericks for further information or to register your interest. Alternatively contact Helen Johnston (YOTY Chairperson – Maleny-Blackall Range Lions Club Inc).

http://malenyblackallrange.qld.lions.org.au/

We congratulate Lachlan on his enthusiasm, commitment, leadership and achievement and wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.

Maleny High would like to thank our local Lions Club and our school Interact Club for their support.

Thanks also to Judy Brodie for her assistance with information for this article.
