PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 4 December

As 2016 comes to a close, I have taken the opportunity to reflect upon the many successes that we have achieved as a whole school community, and celebrate these with our staff teams.

Many of the staff working with junior classes incorporated the ‘Reading to Learn’ program, leading to significant student improvement and engagement with written texts. Our Year 7s and Year 9s also saw gains in several NAPLAN categories, particularly an improvement in the Reading dimension.

Our successes continued with an unprecedented number of our Senior Students attaining a QCE, and predictions for some strong OP results. We are still waiting for final figures to be announced, so these will be published in our first newsletter edition next year.

As a school we have undertaken several audits across different aspects of school management. All of these reviews noted improvement since the last audits were done. I would like to mention the work of Vanessa Duffy, our Agricultural Science teacher, who successfully completed the latest Animal Ethics inspection where the Department was unable to recommend any strategies for improvement. Well done to our Agriculture staff. What a tremendous result!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone - students, parents, community and my very hard working and dedicated staff - who have truly made this year one to celebrate and remember.

To all families travelling during the summer school holidays, be safe and have fun!

I wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Warm Regards,

Deborah Stewart

BYOD SPOTLIGHT

BYOD Connections Term 1 2017

We are looking forward to the 2017 school year and will be working diligently to ensure the continued success of the BYOD program. Below is some important information regarding connecting a device in term 1, 2017.

I have already connected my laptop in 2016

That’s super easy! Unless you have bought a new laptop, or have performed a complete factory reset, your laptop should automatically connect to the network when you return to school. If you do encounter an issue or have replaced a laptop you have already connected, visit the Resource Centre at 2nd break on Mondays for the first 2 weeks of term.

I have never connected a laptop to the school network

We have a little work to do. The information below will be made available at school on the first week, but being prepared now is always a good thing.

All year Levels: Week 1 (23rd to 27th January 2017 )

If you have never connected a laptop to our network, go to the following locations and write down your details during your lunch breaks or before school. Bring along a pen.

Year 11 & 12 – Booklet at library desk (2nd break and before school only)
Year 9 & 10 – N Block Staffroom window on door
Year 8 – Wall outside L Block Staffroom
Year 7 – During first access (TBA)

Connection Schedules

Specific connection times will be made available on the Mondays of each connection week. Check school notices. If you miss your connection time, you will need to wait until week 6.

Important things that must be done prior to connecting

  1. You have read and sign the BYOD acceptable use agreement and submitted it to Student Services. (This is a part of the enrolment package if you are a new student).
  2. You must be the local admin on your laptop.
  3. Operating System has had the latest updates completed.
  4. Anti-virus software installed.
  5. Cloud based software deactivated (e.g Spotify, Skype, Steam).

Year 11 & 12: Week 2 (31st Jan - 3rd February)

Connection schedule in Monday Notices. Write down day and location. Be on time with your fully charged laptop.

Year 10 & 9: Week 3 (7th Feb - 10th Feb)

Connection schedule in Monday Notices. Write down day and location. Be on time with your fully charged laptop.

Year 8: Week 4 (14th Feb - 17th Feb)

Connection schedule in Monday Notices. Write down day and location. Be on time with your fully charged laptop.

Year 7: Week 5 (21st Feb – 24th Feb)

Connection schedule in Monday Notices. Write down day and location. Be on time with your fully charged laptop.

Students who missed connection dates: Week 6 (28th – 3rd March)

Connection schedule in Monday Notices. Write down day and location. Be on time with your fully charged laptop.

BYOD Benefits

Other than having their very own device, students enjoy a number of benefits for being involved in the BYOD program.

  • An increased internet download quota at school.
  • They can personalise their device to suit their learning styles.
  • Easy access to their network drives and printing options when connected to the schools wifi.
  • A free copy of Microsoft Office 2016

https://malenyshs.eq.edu.au/Facilities/Computersandtechnology/Pages/Student-Advantage.aspx

Free Office 2016 Suite

Education Queensland students are entitled to Microsoft Office 2016 on their own personal device, absolutely free. All you need is an internet connection to download it.

For instructions on how to download the program for both windows and apple computers, please use this link:

Microsoft OneNote

Microsoft OneNote comes with the free version of Microsoft Office 2016 made available to students. It is an excellent program, designed specifically for taking notes and organising information. It is designed for students and education. The best thing is that it automatically saves your work! Below is a link to an interactive tutorial on how to use OneNote.

Please be aware that Education QLD has not enabled cloud storage (OneDrive) for students or staff. Don’t worry, this is coming soon. You will need to save your Notebook to your computer.

THE ARTS

The Years 7 and 8 Music Extension class of 2016 have risen early every Wednesday morning this year to be at school for their 7.30am class. They are an exceptionally motivated, enthusiastic and cheerful group of students. The classes this semester have combined the study of music theory with individual practice and group vocal rehearsals. As their culminating performance of the year, the students requested that they perform for an audience other than their parents and families, so off to the Erowal Aged Care Facility they travelled on the 16 of November.

The residents of Erowal were treated to a variety of performances - solos, duets and a whole class vocal ensemble - and the appreciative audience requested a return visit in the New Year. The students should all be proud of the gift of music that they were able to give to the residents and guests, and the shining manner in which they represented Maleny SHS.

Pictured below is the MEX class prior to their performance.

SPORT NEWS

Year 7 Sport

This term students have been participating in an inter-class competition during Sport on a Thursday afternoon. The touch football competition finished at the end of week five. The 7A girls won the female competition and the 7D boys were the champions in the male competition. These students were presented with certificates during Sport in week 6. The year 7s have just finished the second (and last) inter-class competition for the year. It’s been great to see the competitiveness and sportsmanship between the classes and students. A big congratulations to the 7A girls who are all-round athletes, winning again, in the basketball grand final against the 7D girls. In the boys’ basketball competition, the 7B boys fought hard and came away as the champion team in the final. Congratulations to all year 7 students on a very successful and exciting Sporting term!

Year 8 & 9 Sport

It’s been another successful term for our interschool sporting teams. We had three teams make it to the Finals Day, held on Wednesday in week 9. These teams were: Mr Homewood’s year 8/9 girls AFL team, Ms Leach’s year 8/9 girls softball team and Ms Chippendale’s year 9 basketball girls. The girls had some great wins at the finals and Maleny High came away with a second place (AFL) and two thirds (softball & basketball). Special mention must go to Mr Homewood’s year 8/9 girls AFL team who have been playing in a year 9 competition all season and narrowly lost in the grand final to Mountain Creek High. It’s been a great year for Sport and we look forward to doing it all again next year!

Representative Sport

A huge congratulations to one of our year 7 students, Van McNeilly, who recently competed at the state titles for cricket and was chosen in the QLD Under 12 cricket team at the end of the tournament. This is a huge accomplishment, and we wish Van all the best of luck competing at the national competition at the end of the year.

Your Passport to the IMAGINATION

On Monday 14th November, I attended Australia’s Premier Youth Leadership event at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, with the 2017 School Captains: Rosie Martin, Kai Markham, Chantelle Bozicevic, John Martin, Sascha Rexa and Tristan Lashmar.

It was an outstanding opportunity for young people to build leadership skills, share knowledge, and generate ideas on future action. It consisted of keynote talks, multimedia presentations and interactive learning activities with a range of specific outcomes for young people who aspire to lead themselves and others well.

The five keynote speakers and their respective areas were: Leadership – Samantha Skinner; Sport – Poppy Starr & Danielle Prince; Explorer – Alyssa Azar; The Arts – Robbie Miller; Social Entrepreneurs – Nic Marchesi & Lucas Patchett. The students enjoyed them all and were able to relate to, or at least be inspired by, one or more of them. Each of the Captains came away ready to make a difference at Maleny SHS in 2017.

Thank you to the organisers of IMAGINATION for your commitment to youth development.

We found it an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
