PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Swimming Carnival

Bunya has won this year’s swimming carnival, continuing on from their successes in 2016. I’m convinced that Mellum and Obi are waiting for the perfect opportunity to stage their coup and will fight back throughout the year.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

Our last Insight edition asked parents to voice their opinion regarding the first round of parent/teacher interviews for the year. Thank you to those parents who took the time to vote. The majority (72%) of respondents voted for parent/teacher interviews to occur in Term 2, after the mid-semester report cards have been issued. The remaining 28% voted for mid-term one interviews. Therefore, interviews will be held either week 3 or week 4 of Term 2.

Signature Pedagogies

In 2016 Maleny High introduced ‘Reading to Learn’ as a major pedagogical strategy. Last week another ten staff were trained in this methodology. In 2017 we will build upon our pedagogical improvement by running ‘Graduated Release’ and ‘New Pedagogies for Deep Learning’ in-services. Over 30 staff have selected one of these ‘Signature Pedagogies’ to focus upon this year. I am proud to see so many staff investing in their teaching practices, thus benefiting our children. Sue McDermott, out Literacy Coach, will be leading ‘Reading to Learn’. Mr David O’Shea is organising ‘Gradual Release’ and Mr Glenn McIntosh will be taking a lead role with NPDL.

Staff Committees

This year the school is running a number of committees for staff, including: Marketing, Teaching & Learning, Data, Work Place Health Safety and Well-Being, Behaviour, Facilities, and Digital Pedagogies. Each committee will meet eight times during the year and have already identified goals that they want to achieve for the year. I look forward to seeing how the staff evolve their ideas and how these enrich the lives of our students and our school.

School Lockers

The first 70 lockers have arrived and are currently being assembled and placed around the school. Year 7 students have been offered the opportunity to hire these lockers first. If any lockers are still available, then the Year 8 students will be asked next. Our youngest (and sometimes smallest) students are often carrying the heaviest bags. Mr O’Shea and Mrs Leach are managing the distribution of lockers.

Chaplaincy Update

During the past two weeks members of the Chaplaincy Committee, the Guidance Officer and myself have interviewed several employing agencies for Chaplains. This Wednesday we presented information about each agency and made a recommendation to appoint an organisation called ‘Your Dream School Chaplaincy’.

This organisation has worked with schools in New South Wales and Victoria and is starting to branch out into Queensland. We will need to formalise our partnership and begin the process of selecting a new Chaplain for Maleny High. We hope to employ a Chaplain late this term.

Senior School News

Mr Glenn McIntosh has run an OP (Overall Position) workshop for our Year 12 students and will be presenting an evening workshop for any interested parents. This will provide insight into how OPs are calculated and I would encourage as many parents as possible to attend. This presentation will take place on Wednesday, 22nd February from 6pm in H01. OP-eligible students will attend an all-day QCS (Queensland Core Skills) workshop on Wednesday, 8th March.

Maleny High has had a great start to the term and everyone is working together positively to achieve our goals.

Until the next edition, take care.

Regards,

Deb Stewart

FROM THE ARTS

The Arts department is off to a busy start for 2017, with impressive numbers of students choosing Arts subjects. In addition, we have specialised Music and Dance Extension classes operating before school and during lunchtimes to extend the skills and performance opportunities for our talented students. Music Extension runs on Friday mornings from 7.30 – 8.45am and Dance Extension on Thursday mornings from 7.45-8.45am in Waroo. It has been pleasing to see so many of our new Year 7 students already involved in these programs, as well as our instrumental program, led by experienced Music teacher, Ms Karen White.

This year also sees the introduction of the QCAA Music Extension syllabus in our curriculum offerings. This syllabus provides for highly accomplished musicians to take a higher level syllabus, in conjunction with the QCAA Music syllabus. We have several of our most talented music students enrolled in this subject for 2017, supported by senior Music teacher, Ms Liz Druitt.

Following the success of Colours of Love, last year’s C.A.P.E. (Collaborative Arts Program of Excellence) production, nominations and auditions for the 2017 production are already underway. Enthusiastic students and teachers are already busy planning this year’s show. This community performance, celebrating the collaborative and multi-arts talented students of Maleny SHS, is scheduled for the first week of Term 4 (3rd - 5th October). The program offers an opportunity for our most talented Srts students to work in a collaborative process with professional Arts practitioners and teachers, to develop a multi-arts production. Can’t wait to see it taking shape!

The Arts department is very excited to have students nominating to participate in Education Queensland’s Creative Generation opportunities – CGEN on Stage, MOST, and the Creative Generation Visual Art Awards. Look out for future updates on these events through your newsletter.

School Captain’s Report

Hello everyone, and welcome to the start of the school year! 2017 marks a busy year for our school as the 30th anniversary and, three weeks in, it’s already begun. This year, as your six school captains, we will be introducing an article into each newsletter to keep parents and students informed on what our leadership team is doing throughout the year. We would like to thank last year’s captains: Evie Barnes, Kylen Skipper, Amity Thiele and Lachlan White, for doing an outstanding job, and introduce our new captains: John Martin, Tristan Lashmar, Kai Markham, Sascha Rexa, Rosie Martin, and myself, Chantelle Bozicevic.

During the holidays we had a meeting with our school principal, Ms Stewart, to establish our game plan for this year. One of our first ideas was to create our statement of purpose;

This year, as the 2017 Maleny State High School leadership team, our purpose is to unite and motivate both our school and the wider community, by acknowledging and sharing the achievements of our school.

Something that was important to each of us was that student’s ideas are heard. We understand how daunting it can be to talk directly to Admin about a change you would like to see, so we thought it better that ideas could be brought to us. To make this convenient for everyone, we have given each grade ‘go-to’ captains for ideas and changes. For Years 7 & 8, the ‘go-to’ captains are Tristan Lashmar and myself, Chantelle Bozicevic. For Years 9 & 10, Sascha Rexa and John Martin and, for Years 11 & 12, Rosie Martin and Kai Markham. Our captains will be working closely with these year levels, bringing ideas to weekly meetings, and trying our hardest as six equal co-captains, to make the changes our school would like to see.

On Friday, 3rd of February, not only was it our school’s swimming carnival, but we also attended Maleny State Primary School’s Year 6 Badge Ceremony. As a past student, I gave a speech, along with Tristan, about our leadership journey and what it takes to become a leader. It was an amazing opportunity to speak at my primary school and to see my teachers who inspired me. We would like to extend a massive congratulations to each of the Year 6 students taking on leadership roles, and also thank the Primary School for inviting us to such a special event.

On Monday, 6th of February, Tristan and I were asked to come along to the ‘Welcome to Year 7 BBQ’. It was great to meet some more of Maleny’s newest students along with their parents, and we cannot wait to see the amazing things each of you will bring to our school!

Even though we’re only four weeks into the year, we’ve already got some big plans for the school! As most of you would know, in the office we have a ‘brag board’ to showcase the achievements of Maleny High. However, it is important that, as students, we recognise each other’s achievements. Therefore, we are looking at getting a second brag board to be displayed in the tuckshop area where student’s accomplishments can be seen, not only to ‘brag’, but to inspire us all to achieve.

We would like to thank everyone who has congratulated and supported us on our new positions as School Captains, and we hope we can make this school proud.

Chantelle Bozicevic

We ask for parent support in ensuring that your child is correctly, and safely, attired in the full school uniform. The uniform has been carefully chosen for its durability and safety in varied environments (workshops, studios, kitchens, laboratories…). Highlights

Bright, sunny days, and matching enthusiasm were the recipe for fun at this year’s Maleny SHS Swimming Carnival, held on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd of February.

Although the big points are earned through the competitive events, it’s the accumulation of points from the participation and novelty events that add to the team’s overall points, and the overall standings at the end of the two days. Due to the numbers of swimmers in many of these participation events, our carnival was jam-packed full of races. We still managed to squeeze in the odd novelty event and dance – it wouldn’t be a Maleny SHS carnival without them.

Having held some great strength in the pool for a few years running now, Bunya was going to be difficult to topple. At the earliest check of Progressive Points, it was clear that Bunya had their sights set on defending their title. Mellum and Obi weren’t far behind, and the fight to catch Bunya saw them swap places a few times through the day.

The Skins races (a war of attrition for the fastest Freestyle swimmer from each gender from each age group, whereby we eliminate the slowest swimmer one by one, over a series of 25m sprints) once again proved exciting with Joel Weyman winning the boys’ race and Katja Biggs taking out the girls’. The teachers returned to their winning ways (even if they bent the rules a little!) in the House Captains v Staff Relay race.

With a very even spread of Age Champs and fairly similar for Runners-Up, it’s clear that the swimming talent doesn’t belong to one team. This bodes well for a healthy competition. As such, the points were a little closer at the end of the day when compared with the previous year. The top came down, and the bottom came up.

Bunya House successfully defended their title as Swimming Carnival Champions again this year, making it three in a row. The minor placings didn’t change from 2016 with Mellum in second and Obi in third, however the gap has closed, and 2018 will be one to watch.

Final Placings:

BUNYA – 1628pts
MELLUM – 1534pts
OBI – 1462pts

INTERSCHOOL UPDATE

Year 7

Our energetic Year Sevens have selected a sport to compete in for our Interschool sport competition. Some teams have too many students, so coaches have started running trials for these teams. Students who don’t make it into their first choice team will slide across and join another Maleny High sporting team. Teams will be finalised by the end of Week 4, before the competition begins in Week 5. All students were given an information letter about the program, so hopefully all parents and carers have received this! Should you require any further information about the program, please feel free to contact the HPE staffroom on 5499 8129.

We wish all Year 7 students the best of luck as they start on their high school interschool sport journey!

Year 8

The Year Eight cohort have started training and/or trialling for their Winter Sport. Our Maleny students are very fortunate to have the remainder of the term to train on a Wednesday afternoon. This allows students to develop all the skills required for the sport, as well as working on teamwork, cooperation and game strategy. All Year Eight students were given an information letter about the interschool sport program. Please make sure your student comes to school every Wednesday with their full sports uniform. It is important that your student also has their school hat and a full water bottle ready for training on a Wednesday afternoon.

Interschool Sport Coordinator

COMMUNITY NOTICES

FRENCH TUTORING

If you're a student of French, looking to extend your knowledge and skills, or thinking of learning French, then please contact Jane Brand (ph. 0429164181) to discuss rates and times.

UNI JOB SPOT

We are Uni Job Spot, a new website dedicated to posting jobs specifically for the University Students of South-East Queensland. We have found that Parents, in particular, are always looking to hire University Students and up until now have never had access to one place to do that.

Does a student need help with their Japanese or History studies? Perhaps the parents want a psychology student to help out with a special needs child, or a French Au Pair for a semester. Or someone to do extra jobs around the house or mow the lawn at an elderly family member’s house. There are many things parents look to Uni students to help with and now they have direct access to them with Uni Job Spot. All they have to do is sign up and post the job and the students will come to them. At $30 to post the job for two weeks it is the cheapest option out there and they can hire as many people as they need.

We are currently affiliated with students from a range of Tertiary Education Schools, including UQ, the University of the Sunshine Coast, Central University of Queensland and the University of South-East Queensland. We have new students signing up each day.

Never has employing a University student been so easy!

With Thanks,
