PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents and Care Givers,

A lot has happened since our last newsletter. Due to the emergency closure of the school for the last two days of Term One, the Senior block exams had to be held during week one of Term Two. This meant that some report cards were incomplete as results weren’t available. Thank you all for your patience understanding over this period of time. I hope that families have recovered from any weather accidents that may occurred. I know some of my staff are still recovering.

School Chaplain

Lisha Badcock is our new school chaplain. Lisha was introduced to the school community at our first whole of school assembly on the first day back of this term. Lisha has been work-shadowing each Year Level Coordinator as a way of getting to know staff and students. On Wednesday, 3 May the school held a ‘meet and greet’ and it was great to see so many people from the community attending this event. Lisha has also attended a Building Bridges day where she got to know students in a different environment, outside of the classroom.

On Saturday, 27 May we have our annual Chaplaincy Dinner to raise funds to employ our chaplain for additional days. The federal government pays the school $20 000 to employ a chaplain. These funds employ Lisha for 2 days. Any additional funds that are raised by the committee go towards employing Lisha for extra days. If you are interested in attending the dinner, please contact Fran Tickle at school.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

The school conducted its first round of parent/teacher interviews for the year during week two. Over 850 interviews were completed, which is the largest number of interviews our school has ever done. Parents are reminded that they do not have to wait until formal parent/teacher interview days if they would like to speak with their child’s teacher/s. Please email teachers with any specific questions that you may have. The school is committed to developing strong communication between parents and teachers, whether via email updates, phone calls, notes in student diaries or interviews. Our next formal parent/teacher interview day will be held in Term Three.

Interact Success

On the evening of Saturday, 22 April our school’s Interact Club was recognised as ‘Club of the Year’ at the Maleny District Sport and Rec. Club’s ‘Night of Nights’. Our senior Interact students enjoyed the evening and hearing the guest speaker, Mr Ian Dickson. Our junior Interact students assisted by waiting tables on the night. There were many clubs nominated, however it was the Maleny SHS Interact Club that was announced as the winning club for 2017. What a wonderful achievement! Congratulations to our students for their hard work over the last 12 months. Many thanks go also to Kerry Hindle, Naomi Leach and Fran Tickle for their time and effort in helping students.

Stymie

Rachel Downie, founder of the Stymie Company, presented an information evening for parents on Thursday, 4 May. Stymie has been introduced to our school as a way for students to anonymously report any concerns or worries about behaviours and events that they may have witnessed or experienced. Parents who attended commented upon just how little they knew about the cyber world and left appreciative of the opportunity they were given to learn more. Dangerous behaviours in our community are not OK for our young people to experience, and everyone has a responsibility to stamp out this negative behaviour. Together we can make our young people safer.

Mystery on the Maleny Express

If you missed out on a seat, you missed a hilarious and fun-filled evening of bad acting, bad singing, and even worse dancing by the staff of Maleny High! Our ever-optimistic director, Elizabeth Druitt, directed over 30 staff (teaching and support) in the Theatre Restaurant play “Mystery on the Maleny Express”. Food vans were organised for the evening, Interact served the desserts, and the P&C were in charge of the bar. It really was a wonderful collaborative event. Money from the ticket sales is going towards facility improvements for students. Additional funds were also raised for the Blue Dragon orphanage in Vietnam. Elizabeth has a personal connection to this place and the school was delighted to support this cause with her. Happy 30th Birthday Maleny High.

Upcoming Events

On Tuesday, 16 May our Year 7-9 students and their families were invited to attend a presentation about the new Senior Assessment Tertiary Entrance system that will be implemented at Maleny State High School, as well as across Queensland over the next few years. The leadership team of the school have spent a lot of time developing a plan for the future that will ensure an innovative, responsive and flexible Senior schooling program at Maleny.

Maleny High will throw open its gates for the School Open Day on Thursday, 25 May. Interested parents and community members are invited to visit our school to see first-hand exactly what life is like as a secondary student. Two tours are on offer. Bookings will be made through the school office. More information will be provided as the date draws closer.

Jumpers

As the cold weather arrives, parents are reminded that our Uniform Policy specifies a jumper that is navy blue with no markings or other colours. Currently, we are seeing students wearing a rainbow of colours and garments that have no connection to school. Parents are asked to source navy blue jumpers and coats as winter wear for their child/ren. Tracksuit pants are also required to be navy blue. I ask for your support in ensuring that our students are dressed proudly, safely and appropriately as Maleny High students.

Until the next edition, stay safe and well,

Deb Stewart

FROM THE ART DEPARTMENT

EXPRESS EXPLORE EVOLVE

Wow! Where did Term 1 go? The Maleny SHS Arts department continues to be a very busy and productive faculty with numerous activities, competitions, performances and assessment presentations throughout last term and into Term Two. With the sudden end to the last week of Term One, several performances were rescheduled. Our drama department saw some outstanding Year 11 Commedia dell’arte performances and the audience was really impressed by the quality and maturity of the performances of our Year 9 students. This is testimony to the high expectations and challenges which drama teacher, Robyn Jones, offers her students. Well done to all!

Our MEX students continue their popular breakfast concerts at Maple 3 Cafe, showcasing the excellence within our music department, led by music teachers Liz Druitt and Karen White. Some of our music students will also be heading off on a Music Study Tour, visiting a number of post-secondary school options for continuing on a music career path. Students will visit TAFE Southbank, the Griffith University Conservatorium, QUT and JM Performing Arts.

Our Dance Extension class competed in the Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod on Friday, 5th May, competing in two sessions with a hip hop style routine, and a fast-paced and technical contemporary dance. Students have been working hard towards this event before school, during lunch times and on public holidays. Again, a great effort by all, and thanks to parents for supporting rehearsal schedules.

C.A.P.E.

Our new Arts Extension program ( C.A.P.E.) is well underway. With workshopping, script development, auditions and casting completed, we are into rehearsal mode. This collaborative Arts production involves talented and committed Arts students with a range of artistic skills, and offers an opportunity to extend these skills through partnerships with professional artists. We have established a link to USC, who work with students on their ideas and script development to construct a final script. In Term Three, we will workshop performance skills, moving towards our community production on the 6th and 7th of October. Look out for Times Are a Changin’ and come and support our C.A.P.E students.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

Hey! My name is Lisha and I have recently come on board as part of the Student Support Team in the role of School Chaplain here at Maleny State High School. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the students at Maleny High as I have always had a passion for seeing young people reach their full potential.

I started here at the school at the beginning of Term Two and have quickly learnt the importance of bringing a jacket for the chilly Maleny mornings which remind me of my hometown in Tasmania. I have also learnt that going on a canoeing field trip with students almost always involves capsizing.

I am already enjoying my time here at Maleny and I look forward to continuing to develop relationships with the school community. If you have any questions in regards to chaplaincy, please feel free to give me a call at the school.

Cheers!

Talk Soon,

Lish

INTERNATIONAL HOMESTAY

Have you ever considered hosting an International Student?

Hello parents and caregivers,

Maleny High will be experiencing a very international flavour in Term Three.

Our yearly Study Tour friends from Kaisei and Sakura High Schools in Japan will again be visiting us in July and August. They are both small groups and are here for 13 and 6 nights respectively.

In addition, we will have students from Italy, Germany, Japan, Spain, Belgium and Brazil studying at the school under the International Student Program (ISP). These students are with us for between one term to one year.

I am seeking homes in the Maleny and surrounding areas to participate in this amazing and rewarding program by providing a safe and caring home for these students. You do not need to be a family with students enrolled at Maleny High to be a homestay provider. In fact, I’d love to hear from families with young children, singles, retirees etc. Homestay families receive a non-taxable allowance to cover student expenses. You will be provided with an orientation to the program and ongoing support for the duration of the student’s time with you, including 24/07 access to a staff member via mobile phone.

Standard requirements for homestay are:

  • All members of the household over 18 must hold a current Blue Card (I can assist with applying for this card – there is no cost to the applicant).
  • Provide a bedroom (not shared*) with a bed, study desk, chair and light, and wardrobe storage (*short-term Study Tour students may share a bedroom with a child of the same gender and similar age).
  • Provide all meals.

If you have ever considered hosting a student, or have questions about the program, please contact me:

SCHOOL CAPTAINS’ REPORT

Hello everyone and welcome to the third edition of the Maleny State High School student leadership team report. Three weeks in and we are busy.

On the 24th and 25th of April, we participated in a variety of Anzac Day commemorative services. These included the school ceremony, the Dawn Service, the Erowal service and, of course, the Parade. It was an honour for us to represent our school at such an important day in our community and we thank all who enabled us to share in acknowledging the contribution made by servicemen and women in protecting our nation. We felt very privileged to be given opportunities to speak and were very proud of each Captain that spoke.

John and Rosie Martin did an amazing job with their speech at the parade, as did Chantelle Bozicevic at the Dawn Service. They truly exemplified the ideologies of Maleny students and their professionalism and empathy. We were also very proud to march, along with our fellow students, at the parade demonstrating the appreciation that Maleny High holds for those men and women. Again, it was truly an honour to represent our school as Maleny’s School Captains. We would also like to thank Mr Chris Brooker and the T.S Centaur Cadets for their contribution to the ceremony at our school and to the Maleny Community.

That’s all for this week. Stay tuned for the next instalment!
