PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 3 September

Dear Parents and Care Givers,

I would like to share some personal news with the school community. Since the last newsletter, I was shortlisted and have been interviewed for the position of Principal at Maleny High. It is with great joy that I let the Maleny school community know that I have been appointed as the permanent Principal of Maleny State High School from Term Four onwards. I am very grateful and honoured to continue as Principal, and I look forward to building upon the successes that this school has experienced since I started in 2015.

Staffing: It comes as no surprise to parents to hear that our school community has been hit with the flu that has been going around. Many students and staff have succumbed to this, and we have had relief teachers in place over the latter half of the term. This has been a little disruptive to our classes, but unavoidable. My thanks to the many staff who stepped up, and have taken on other people’s jobs in order for the school to continue operating.

Time to Celebrate: Two very talented Year 12 students, Lily Whitaker and Dia Belkessam, each entered a Senior Visual Art piece into the Regional Showcase Art Awards. Only five students from our region could be selected to have their art work exhibited at GOMA in 2018. Maleny High has received two of the five places, with both Lily and Dia receiving Excellence Awards. What an outstanding effort! This is a credit to the work they have put into their art, as well as the support of their teachers.

Sakura Study Tour: I would like to thank Ms Su Carbery, Mrs Roz Presnell, Ms Karen Price and Mr Brad Owens for their work in our International Student Program. Some familiar faces arrived from Sakura recently, along with plenty of new faces. Many students from previous stays hosted a Japanese student in their home again. Even though these students stayed for just over a week, they jammed in as much as they could. This year families in Sakura will host our students during the first week of the September school holidays. I wish all of our students and teachers a safe trip, and hope they learn a lot to enhance their Japanese language study.

QCS Test: That time of the year has come around again for our Year 12 students who have ambitions of going on to university. Two days of tests were administered to over 60 students this year. I would like to thank Mr Wade Jacobsen for stepping in as Chief Supervisor while Mr McIntosh was sick. He did a fantastic job and the two days ran smoothly.

Career Ed. and SET Planning: Our Year 10s have participated in a Career Education program which is designed to assist them in making informed decisions regarding their future options and subjects for Senior study. I would like to remind students and parents that subject selection forms were due in to the school office by Friday, 8 September. The school requires this vital information to make decisions about what subjects will be running, and what staff are needed for 2018. Please, if you still have your subject selection form at home, hand it in to the Student Services window of the school office as soon as possible.

The Year Level Coordinators are finding a large number of Junior students coming to school drinking energy drinks such as “Mother”, “V” or “Red Bull”. These drinks are high in caffeine, high in sugar and not appropriate for young, growing bodies. Research indicates that too much caffeine and sugar is detrimental to young people. The P&C have supported the school in banning these energy drinks from our school. As of Term Four, any student found with energy drinks will have them confiscated and poured out. These drinks affect student behaviour and student judgement. Recently, I have had many young students making very poor decisions around their behaviours before school and during school hours. I would ask for your support in this matter by speaking to your child and suggesting alternative drinks.

Until our next edition, enjoy the September school holidays

Regards,

Deborah Stewart

New frontier for Maleny High Droughtmasters

At the end of 2016, our school was given the opportunity to purchase a 10 month old Droughtmaster heifer from Paul and Trish Mackay of Ianbrae Droughtmasters. This heifer has the desired attributes that we are striving for in our stud, and it was due to this that she was selected to be an embryo donor. Naturally, a cow will produce one calf per year. By incorporating artificial breeding methods into our stud, we can increase the number of calves born from our best breeding female over the lifetime of the cow.

The Childs family of Glenlands Droughtmasters donated the semen from one of their leading sires, Glenlands Federation. The combination of both sire and dam should put some impressive calves on the ground. Thank you to both the Mackay and Childs families for supporting our school.

Preparation for this began weeks prior, to cycle the heifer, inseminate and prepare for flushing. A massive thank you to Mr Russell Seears for his assistance with the entire process.

On Friday 1 September, bovine specialists Ced and Rowena Wise from Ced Wise Artificial Breeding Services visited our school to flush embryos from the heifer and then freeze them in our liquid nitrogen tank for later use. Students had the opportunity to watch the process of flushing and collecting embryos, seeing them under a microscope and comparing viable and non-viable embryos in the mobile laboratory. Ced and Rowena will be visiting again at the end of November for a second flush of embryos and to implant embryos into recipient cows.

We look forward to seeing these calves hit the ground in 2018.

ART NEWS

Every year the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery exhibits the Creative Generation Visual Art awards. This year Dia Belkessam and Lily Whitaker entered the competition. The opening of this big event was last Thursday night, with many students, parents and teachers from all over the region attending the award announcements. Five students out of 60 artworks were chosen on the night to exhibit their work in the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, a very prestigious accomplishment.

Congratulations to both Dia and Lily who were presented with these awards. Both girls will exhibit their artwork in Brisbane next year - a huge achievement!

CHAPPY’s CORNER

Term 3 Highlights:

Welcome Hayden: A big thank you to those who donated to our chaplaincy dinner earlier in the year. With the funds raised we were able to see our Chaplain, Lisha increase to four days a week (Mon, Tue, Wed and Fri) and employ an additional Chaplain for one day a week (Fri).

Welcome Hayden! Hayden has had a wealth of experience working in schools and is eager to build relationship with students at Maleny SHS. Hayden is currently looking into options to commence a Guys’ Group.

Breakfast Club: We commenced Breakfast Club mid-way through Term three and have seen on average 50 students fed every Friday morning. Breakfast club has created a fun and inclusive culture with students interacting through food and games!

Girls’ Group: Working alongside our School Based Youth Health Nurse we commenced the SHINE program. The program promotes self-worth, confidence and aims to help participants recognise their value. We have had positive feedback about the program and we are looking forward to continuing to run this program next term.

SPECIAL MENTION: A big shout out to the Chaplaincy Committee for welcoming both Hayden and I, and continuing to support us in our role. The work you do behind the scenes is phenomenal.

If you have any questions in regards to chaplaincy please feel free to give me or Hayden a call at the school.

Cheers! Talk Soon.

CHAPLAINCY

GENCONNEX INC. - MALENY HIGH SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY

Chaplaincy at Maleny SHS is in good hands. Our School Chaplain, Lisha, has been working with students for almost two terms, four days a week, and is achieving great things within our school. Recently, Hayden has joined us as a new Chaplain, working one day per week. Lisha and Hayden are well supported by a very committed Chaplaincy committee made up of staff, parents, community reps and students.

The four executive members of our committee have been serving for many years now and, at the AGM to be held in October, they will be standing down. We are seeking not only new members for our Chaplaincy committee, but we are also seeking people who may be interested in holding a position on the Executive. We are looking for nominations for Chairperson, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.

We have approximately eight meetings per year, and currently there are two major fundraising events held throughout the year: our Chaplaincy Appeal Dinner in May, and our Golf Day later in the year.

If you are someone who has a passion for, or an interest in, the welfare of our young people, we would love to hear from you. Our AGM is being held on Monday 16th October, commencing at 3.45p.m. in the Resource Centre here at the High School. You would be most welcome. If you know someone who may be interested in this, even if they do not have children at our school, please feel free to invite them to come along.

If you would like any further information, or wish to speak with someone, you can contact Sharon Penney on 54 998 111 / 0404 442 570 or Fran Tickle on 54 998 128 / 0419 738 064.

YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHY CAMP TO BINNA BURRA

Between the 9th and 11th of August Mrs Edwards and Mrs Collis took their Year 12 Geography classes to Binna Burra Eco Lodge where they explored trails in the Lamington National Park. Over the three days, we walked around 36kms with the longest trek on the 2nd day to Mt. Merino, which was a 21km round trip. The Coomera Waterfalls was a highlight, which enticed some brave students to go for a refreshing dip. The trip was a great success as the class immersed themselves in nature. They also experienced a talk with a local ranger which allowed students the opportunity to learn the importance of maintaining biodiverse environments like this nationally listed wonder.

Crime Prevention Unit

My name is Kym Jackson and I have recently commenced duty on the Sunshine Coast in the Crime Prevention Unit.

In an attempt to remind Sunshine Coast families that they can actively participate in being “crime wise” and keep abreast of criminal activity, as well as promoting positive policing community events on the Sunshine Coast, we invite you to advertise the “Mypolice Blog” and add the below web link / address (at end of signature block) to your electronic newsletters to distribute to your families so their households can subscribe (no cost or commitment involved) to the Blog.

This Blog is a great way for kids to read and learn about personal safety and being responsible with their property eg. locking up their bikes, also the “feel good” stories teach kids that police are there to help them and are approachable if they ever need police help.

It would be great to hear from your school or families regarding thoughts, questions or inquiries regarding the Blog or crime concerns in general.

I’m looking forward to meeting you and your school community in the future.

Kind regards,

Kym Jackson
