PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 4 October

Dear Parents and Care Givers,

We are already four weeks in and what a great start we’ve had! Our talented C.A.P.E students performed their production, The Times They Are a-Changin’, at the Maleny Community Hall. This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase their abilities across a range of fields. Our Drama and Dance students took their audiences on a trip through time, visiting significant historical events along the way. Several solo vocalists performed, accompanied by talented musicians. Well done to all performers. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, as did the audiences for the various shows. A huge thank you to the wonderful teachers who were led by Ms Cath Gray, Head of the Arts program at Maleny High.

Senior Leaders

It was my pleasure to announce our School Captains and House Captains for 2018 at our recent Presentation Night. A panel made up of the Year Eleven Coordinator, two current school captains and myself interviewed all applicants. These candidates then presented their 3-4 minute speech in front of their peers. The following are our school leaders for 2018. In our next edition, I will be able to promote our other students leaders.

School Captains: Mikki Doonan, Joel Dauth, Isabella Gray, Zac Pirie, Neive Vinall
Obi House Captains: Nicole Byford, Agnes Mohan, Rosie Skull
Mellum House Captains: Elisha Biggs, Isabella Gray, Kody Hellen
Bunya House Captains: Mikaylah Bevege, Tarci Carey, Aislinn Murray

Presentation Night

Thank you to Mr David O’Shea, who led a team of staff to organise and prepare for this event, and what an evening it was! It is always a pleasure to reflect upon our students’ achievements. Our school continues to improve across all areas. We celebrated student success in sporting, cultural, leadership and academic pursuits. This year, students were asked to apply for the special awards they were interested in and, as always, I am awed by our community supporters and their generosity. This community works so hard to support their young people, and I would like to sincerely thank all of our community groups and supporters.

Unveiling of our new School Logo

Mr Simon Kranz has chaired our Marketing Committee and led the school through a process of consultation and selection. We were able to unveil the logo at our Presentation Night. Thank you to Mr Kranz for his leadership throughout this project. Thank you to all of the people who participated in this process by voting and offering their feedback.

SATE (Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance) Update

Mr Glenn McIntosh (Deputy Principal – Senior Schooling) and I attended a two-day conference last week. Over 1200 Principals and Senior Schooling Deputy Principals were also there to hear how the QCAA is leading this agenda for implementation in 2019. Maleny High will be partnering with Nambour State College and Meridan State College to strengthen our school’s preparation for the external and internal assessment, and the delivery of the new syllabuses. Our school will be hosting another Parent Information Evening to keep our Year 7-9 parents updated. An email will be sent to parents with further details.

Ban of Energy Drinks

Maleny High has taken the decision to prohibit students from bringing and consuming energy drinks at school. These drinks are high in caffeine, sugar and, in many cases, guarana which can all affect behaviour and reactions. This was discussed at August’s P&C meeting and all parents in attendance were supportive of this move.

Very soon our Year 12 students will finish their time at Maleny high. Final exams will be underway when you receive this newsletter, which means that formals and graduation ceremonies will soon follow. I look forward to celebrating those events with you in our next edition.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones.

Regards
Deborah Stewart

2018 CEF National Scholarships

2018 Scholarships Guide a one-stop-resource for school leavers

The Country Education Foundation (CEF) has launched a new online Scholarships Guide today, helping young rural and regional Australians access scholarships, grants and bursaries.

This purpose-built online search platform will allow students to locate hundreds of scholarships in just a few quick clicks.

There are hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships up for grabs each year, but knowing where to look and how to apply is a big hurdle for school leavers, especially country students who don’t have easy access to tertiary institutions.

CEF has brought together scholarships from a broad range of facilities from across Australia in one easy to use website. The CEF 2018 Scholarships Guide is a gold mine of higher education scholarship opportunities.

“Who says the next Nobel Prize or a cure for cancer can’t come from a country kid who has been taught in a one-teacher school? Not us! We are firm believers that your postcode shouldn’t determine your destiny, this resource can make the task of finding additional financial assistance that much less overwhelming for school leavers” CEF CEO Wendy Cohen said.

“School leavers from rural and regional Australia have just as much potential as kids who grow up in the city, but are being locked out of further education because of financial pressures and a lack of access to opportunities.”

Ms Cohen said CEF is committed to levelling the higher education playing field for rural and regional students.

“Accommodation, course fees, textbooks and equipment and travel are just too much for a lot of students and their families. Relocation costs, accommodation and living expenses are closing the door on opportunity for a lot of country kids and that’s just not fair.”

“If we can help with that through offering our Scholarships Guide as well as our own local foundation grants, we are helping open doors and closing the education attainment gap.”

This is the second year in a row that Macquarie University has chosen to be the major sponsor of the CEF 2018 Scholarships Guide.

“I am very proud of our sponsorship of this scholarship guide. As a former rural student, growing up in Ivanhoe and Dubbo, I understand the challenges young people from regional, rural and remote areas face, and the importance of education in helping them reach their full potential. This partnership with the Country Education Foundation will point students towards resources to support them on their academic journey and, I hope, change their lives the way my education changed mine,” said Professor Bruce Dowton, Vice-Chancellor of Macquarie University.

CEF principal partner, Origin Foundation, is also proud to be involved in opening doors for country students.

Head of the Origin Foundation, Sean Barrett, said: “The further students are located from metropolitan centres the poorer they perform. According to some data, a 15-year-old in the city is likely to be a year-and-a-half more advanced than a young person in a remote area. The problem is not in far away communities of the Northern Territory, but begins in the towns an hour’s drive from our capital cities.”

“Addressing this unacceptable disparity is a focus for the Origin Foundation, which believes all Australian children deserve a good education to set them up for future success,” Mr Barrett said.

Update School Logo

Thank you to all of the students, parents and teachers who participated in the school logo poll that was undertaken last term. It was clear to see that there were two favourites out of the three options available. Over 130 people responded to the online poll that was made available to families via email. Combined with the student & teacher poll, a clear favourite was determined. We are proud to present our updated school logo.

The roll-out of the updated design will be varied. An outline of the roll out of the updated design is below:

  • The school uniform will remain unchanged for 2018.
  • In 2019, the school uniform shirts will have the updated logo and be ready for purchase by the beginning Year 7 students and other students.
  • We will have a 2-3 year phase-out of the uniform with the existing logo.
  • Specialised school uniform and clothing will feature the updated logo from the start of 2018 onwards. This includes: Senior Jerseys, Senior Jackets and any new school clothing purchased in 2018.
  • All official documentation and email correspondence will include the updated logo from the start of 2018.
  • The front sign and other signage throughout the school will be gradually replaced with the updated logo throughout 2018.
  • The school social networking websites already feature the updated logo. The website is undergoing an update and will feature the updated logo by the end of 2017.

AGRICULTURE

Wide Bay Interschool Hoof & Hook Competition

From Wednesday 11 October to Friday 13 October, the show team travelled to Nanango Showgrounds to compete in the Wide Bay Interschool Hoof & Hook competition. We took six animals to the event, three steers that would compete in the steer competitions (judged on the hoof and then at the meatworks, have the carcasses judged on the hook) and three stud Droughtmasters that returned to school following the event.

Students and animals did extremely well over the three days, placing in various events. The results are below:

Steers (on the hoof):

Maleny High Bageera placed 7th out of 21 animals.
Maleny High Lincoln came 1st out of 13 animals.
Hook results have not been released yet.

Students:

Year 7/8 Novice Handler class: Alessandra Schauer 2nd and Grace Woolston 3rd out of 27 competitors (conducted over three heats).
Year 7/8 Intermediate Handler class: Emily Ikin 1st and Joe Shirley 6th out of 17 competitors (conducted over two heats).
Year 9/10 Experienced Judging: Caitlin Franklin 3rd out of 27 competitors.
Year 12 Experienced Judging: Cynthia Forster-Jones 3rd out of 23 competitors.

Congratulations to all students on their achievements.

Farewells

This event was also the final competition for our graduating Year 12 students. Samara Clements, Cynthia Forster-Jones and Tamara Forsdike have been an integral part of the Show Team for many years. These amazing young women have gone above and beyond in the last two years, teaching the junior members, and helping them learn and grow as young cattle handlers. Thank you for all your help, dedication and support, Seniors. We wish you every success in your future endeavours.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

At the end of last term we farewelled six of our students, who all returned to their home countries during the holidays. They certainly added vibrancy to the Maleny High School environment during their time with us.

As the year winds down, we are preparing to farewell some of our long-term students. Mirei, Menamu and Katharina have been with us all year. Nicole has truly integrated into our mainstream school life after studying here for 18 months. She will soon graduate with her Year 12 cohort and then return to Italy. These amazing young women will be greatly missed by both their schoolmates and staff.

Although not here for quite as long, but missed just as much, are: Marie, Charles, Aurora and Adriana. Two of our students, Zoe and Adria, will continue on with us into 2018.

Thank you all for the cultural diversity you have brought to our school. Students and staff alike have learnt a lot from you and we hope you have enjoyed the Maleny High experience!

As we prepare for 2018, I am excited to announce that we have secured a Study Tour group from China. This is a first for Maleny SHS as we continue to welcome International students to our school and community. We are expecting 15 students ranging in age from 12 to 17, male and female, from various schools in the Shanghai region of China. The students are only here for a week, from 29th January to 4th February, which is the second week back at school next year. If you are interested in hosting one or two of these students, or being a buddy for them at school, please contact me.

Thank you.

SPORTS NEWS

Year 7 Interschool Sport:

This term students are participating in an interclass competition during Sport time on a Thursday afternoon. For the first five weeks of the term a touch football competition will run, before finishing the year with a basketball competition. The 7A boys and 7E girls appear to be the teams to beat at the moment, after being grand final winners in the lunchtime futsal competition held last term.

It’s important that all students come to school in their full sports uniform on a Thursday. They also need to bring their hat and water bottle. Good luck to all classes.

Year 8 Interschool Sport:

The Year Eights have started their last round of interschool sport for the year. Maleny has fielded basketball, fast 5 football, tennis, touch football and AFL teams in the competition. Teams have both ‘home’ and ‘away’ games on a Wednesday afternoon for the remainder of the term. On the weeks that students travel to other schools, buses return to Maleny High by 3 pm for normal transport home. Sport is a wonderful opportunity for students to make new connections, improve fitness levels and learn new skills, as well as develop team spirit and display sportspersonlike behaviour. Good luck to all teams. Go Maleny!

VETECH NEWS

In Term 3 we had over 70 students participate in Work Experience. Even though we had so much support from local employers, many students travelled out of town, even out of state to their placements.

During the designated time, teachers rang the employers to confirm students had arrived as arranged and then had the opportunity to report on the behaviour, attitude and performance of the student.

So far, all employers have reported back positively on their students:

LEILANI WAS FANTASTIC! SHE WAS A GREAT WORKER, VERY ORGANISED AND EASY TO GET ON WITH.

BENJAMIN GETS BETTER EVERY DAY. VERY EBTHUSIASTIC.

IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE HAVING SALLY DURING THE LAST WEEK OF TERM. BOTH MYSELF & THE CHILDREN ENJOYED HAVING SALLY WORK WITH US.

Maleny State High School would like to thank all employers, parents and students for their contribution to this process in 2017. Work experience is vital for students to gain an appreciation of the difference between school and work life. It also provides valuable insights into future careers.

YEAR LEVEL COORDINATORS’ NEWS

Emu Gully Year 8 Camp

72 Year 8 students plus Ms Burgaty, Mr Cerda, Ms Leach and Ms Presnell recently had the outstanding opportunity of attending the Emu Gully Adventure Camp. Students participated in a jam-packed two days of challenges designed to teach the core character values of Courage, Mateship, Perseverance and Sacrifice. Alpha, Bravo and Charlie companies competed against each other under the tutelage of Colin, Guy and Adam. These experienced facilitators challenged each student to think about others before themselves and to learn to trust one another as mates do.

Year 8 campers learnt what ‘muddy’ really means in an enactment of the Kokoda Track, learnt to trust each other in the Bridge over the River Kwai, and learnt communication skills in Escape from Colditz. All challenges were modelled after ANZAC history and each facilitator took great pains to explain the historical context of what our ANZACs went through as they retold their history. Students returned to Maleny on Wednesday, tired and weary, but enriched through this great experience.

Maleny Library

In the month of November, Maleny Library will be showcasing memorabilia, artefacts and local images depicting the Maleny community during WW2.

During this month of commemoration, the Maleny Library will be holding a recipe swap.

We would like to invite you to contribute* handwritten copies of a family or heirloom recipe, along with a short description of why the recipe is important to you or your family, for display at the library. The idea is that these local recipes will be on display for the month and available for members of the community to access and try at home. The aim of the recipe swap is to strengthen local community connections. Please do not hesitate to ask for more information, if needed. We look forward to your contribution.

(*Please note, that if you contribute a recipe, ensure that it is a copy and not the original, as it will become a part of the Maleny Library Local Studies Collection after the display period finishes.)
