FROM THE ARTS

ART EXCURSION

Curious Affection, an exhibition by Patricia Piccinini, was a great installation for the Year 11 and 12 Visual Art students to ponder over. In week seven 23 of our Visual Art students travelled down to the Gallery of Modern Art to view this controversial art show. Piccinini’s work challenges our perception of ‘chimeras’ (multi-species fusion) which are influenced by science and Surrealism. The students found the creatures sometimes startling, rarely fearsome, but filled with life and empathy. As a group, we also visited the ‘Creative Generation’ exhibit. This is an exhibition that displays artworks of a selected state wide group of 2017 Year 12 students.

Two of our students from last year, Dia Belkessam and Lily Whitaker are currently exhibiting in this inspiring exhibition.

Overall, a great day was had by all and it will be interesting to see the influence of these exhibitions in our student’s work.

MUSICAL

Students and staff at Maleny SHS, alongside Heartspace Performing Arts Centre, have been working hard rehearsing for their upcoming winter show “High School Musical”.

It is simply bursting with glitter, glam, song, dance and glitz! We have a cast and crew of 120 on stage at our school hall on June 27th and 28th from 6:30pm.

Come along to support our budding actors, musicians and dancers. “High School Musical” has so much to offer - a family friendly show where students learn the importance of being ‘all in this together!’

AGRICULTURE NEWS

Show Team 2018

The team has had a busy start to the year, starting off with the annual Droughtmaster Futurity held at Gatton in March. One of our young Droughtmaster bulls, Maleny High Maximus, placed 6th out of a strong line up of 14 bulls aged between 13 & under 16 months of age. Students competed in a variety of other events including stud cattle and parade classes and did a fantastic job at our opening show.

In mid-May, the team travelled to Rockhampton for BEEF 2018 with our team of Droughtmaster cattle. This week long event happens once every three years and was a fantastic opportunity for our students to compete against the best in the beef industry and make strong connections to key leaders in this area of agriculture. Lilly Lucas placed 5th out of 110 competitors in her age group, 13-14 years. This involved judging three separate groups of cattle and then being selected in the top 10 to speak to quite a large crowd about why she placed the cattle in her order. This is an amazing achievement for Lilly.

On June 1-2, the show team represented our school at the Maleny Show. Students had a very successful show, competing in parade and judging classes on the followed by stud cattle classes with our Droughtmasters on Saturday. In the 10 years to under 15 years, Maleny High students took out the top four placings out of 16 people, judged over two heats. Joe Shirley did an amazing job leading heifer Maleny High Matilda and placed 1st in his age group. Lilly Lucas placed 2nd with Maleny High Maximus. Emily Ikin placed 3rd with young calf Maleny High Nadia and Alessandra Schauer placed 4th with calf Maleny High Nalani. In the 15 years to under 25 years, Oskar Haehl placed 4th. A tremendous effort in a line-up of much older competitors.

In the junior judging component, Lilly Lucas placed 2nd out of 15 competitors in the 10 years to under 15 years category. In the 15 years to under 25 category, Caitlin Franklin placed 4th out of 16 competitors. Both of these girls did an amazing job publically speaking and judging the cattle.

On Saturday, Maleny High Maximus placed 2nd in the tropical bull aged 12 months to under 18 months.

The team will compete next at Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show on June 15-16. Congratulations to all students for their efforts and success so far this year.

CHAPPY’S CORNER

Greetings to all,

If you haven’t seen my face yet, my name is Hayden Greathead and I am the Chaplain at Maleny High School. I’d like to use this space in each newsletter to share a part of what’s been happening in Chaplaincy.

  • Year 7 Boys Group called ‘Connections’
For 6 weeks, for half hour per week, I have been working with 10 Year Seven boys focussing on teamwork, growing positive relationships, coping with emotions and problem solving - all with the goal of supporting their schooling experience.

  • Free Friday Breakfast
Since the start of this year, I have continued the free Friday breakfast for any students who would like to drop by. Each week 50-70 students have been fed and joined in the positive social environment that comes with it. Two community volunteers will also be coming to assist from now on. The breakfast is held outside A block, just near the bus bay, from 8am-8:45am every Friday.
  • Camps/Community
Last week I attended the Emerging Elders camp in Esk and joined some students of ours on an afternoon hike. It was great to enjoy the environment with them and, together, take a break from technology. I also spoke at the Maleny Baptist Church and Church On The Rise Maleny, who both showed strong support for Chaplaincy and our young people.

Yours Faithfully,

Hayden

Local Student to Get a Taste of Extreme Poverty

Local student Mikki Doonan, is getting a taste of how the 1.4 billion people around the world living in extreme poverty survive as she tries to live on just $2 a day.

Thousands of young Australians will give up their daily treats to live on $2 a day for five days as part of anti-poverty campaign, Live Below the Line.

“I’m doing ‘Live Below the Line’ because if there is a chance to be part of making a difference in the world and ending poverty, I want to be part of it.

It’s not a lot of work, and it doesn’t take much time, but I believe when everyone works together it can make a lot of positive difference,” she said.

Mikki, a Maleny State High School student, was inspired to do the challenge to raise awareness and money for people around the world living in extreme poverty.

“I wish that everybody had access to three meals a day and that education was regarded as a basic human right- not a privilege,” she said.

In countries just north of Australia, people live without running water or access to schools or medical care.

Since its inception in 2010, ‘Live Below the Line’ has raised over $10.8 million, which has been instrumental in facilitating education projects in Cambodia and Timor-Leste.

‘Live Below the Line’ is a campaign run by the Oaktree Foundation, Australia’s largest aid and development organisation run by volunteers under the age of 26.

SPORT NEWS

X-Country

On Thursday the 24th of May we had a team of 36 runners compete at the District Cross Country, held at the Maroochydore Cricket Club. We had excellent results throughout the day, with some students placing in the top 20. The students showed great effort and persistence on the enduring track.

Three students: Adria Roset De Mas (Year 11), Chelsea Negus (Year 11) and Jared Jackson (Year 7) qualified through to the next level. They competed at the Regional Cross Country on the 5th of June.

FROM THE P & C

Pop Up Cinema

Thank You to everyone who came out to support this event. We hope everyone enjoyed the Double Feature and had a great time.

The Maleny State High School P&C would like to personally thank the following: Isabel Riggs, Jo Henderson, Ashleigh Ebenezer, Natasha Collis, Neive Vinall, Isabella Gray, Zac Pirie, Minette Cooper, Max Sullivan-Hogberg, Charlie Burnett, Michael Deloie, Eli Cooper and Elliott Audley for their recent contribution of time to the planning, organising and running of the Movie Night Fundraiser on Friday the 11th of May. This event could not have been a success without the dedication and hard work of each and every one of them. We are happy to report that more than 50 parents, caregivers, students and community members in total came together to support this event. Once again, thank you all for your time, energy and efforts!

Clothing Drive

In an effort to foster community involvement and inclusion within our wonderful Sunshine Coast Community through the P&C, we are holding a clothing drive for SunnyKids who help support at risk children on the Sunshine Coast. From the 23rd of July to the 3rd of August we will be accepting donations of children's clothing which will be given to SunnyKids who help fill the need that exists for 5,000 children on the Sunshine Coast in need of assistance. Please consider donating outgrown, or no longer worn clothing to this worthy cause which is a simple and green way to help these innocent children.

The School and P&C will run this clothing collection over two those weeks. During that time, all of the clothing will be washed, dried and folded, and at the end of the two weeks, we will take all of the donated clothing to SunnyKids where they will pass it on to the many children in need. Everyone has so much going on in our own lives, but by taking just a few minutes of our time, to go through a couple of drawers to donate a few pieces of clothing, could really have a positive effect on someone else's life. The clothing will not be sold or shipped elsewhere, it will go to children in need on the Sunshine Coast.

Maleny Monster Mash - First Annual

The P&C is hosting our First Annual Maleny Monster Mash on Friday, 26th of October. If you would like to be involved in the planning, organising, decorating and running of this event please feel free to contact Danielle Watt, P&C President on 0468332019. As a P&C, we want to focus on fundraising events that will engage as many people as possible, while being fun and enjoyable for everyone involved. This will definitely be one of those events.

Our next P&C Meeting is Wednesday, 20th of June at 6pm. Everyone is invited and encouraged to be a part of the Maleny State High School P&C.

Lions’ Recycle for Sight Australia

The Maleny Blackall Range Lions’ Club has been a keen contributor to this program for many years. Every year, Recycle 4 Sight Australia collects thousands of pairs of used spectacles and sunglasses. The program distributes regraded spectacles to many parts of the world for distribution to poor people in need.

Lions Clubs have provided a collection box for your school, and would appreciate the support of residents in donating glasses no longer needed – for “a second life” in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and other countries in need.

Over the 15 years that the Australian program has existed, the program has delivered 2.5 million pairs of glasses.

We would appreciate donations of your unneeded glasses by taking them to the Lions box at the Admin office. Thank you!

UQ - Parenting Teens Survey

The University of Queensland Parenting and Youth Mental Health Survey
(How Do Parent-Adolescent Relationships Influence Youth Mental Health?)

Mental health problems in young people can have negative long-term effects, such as a higher risk of lower educational attainment, joblessness, poor physical health, problematic substance use, and self-injury. Past research has indicated that the parent-child relationship plays an important role in outcomes for young people with mental health problems. Teenagers’ relationships with their parents are important in helping teenagers become more resilient and better able to cope with strong emotions.

This study looks at how teenagers and their parents get along with one another, how parents raise their teenagers, and how this affects teenagers’ wellbeing. Results from this study will tell us more about how positive parent-adolescent relationships can buffer the associations between mental health problems and poor outcomes for young people, and lead to improved self-worth and positive adolescent well-being. It will also help us consider improvements in how parents can be better involved in supporting young people facing mental health difficulties.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for parents of teenagers who:

  1. are aged between 11 and 17 years old; and
  2. live in Australia.

We are interested in the perspectives of parents of teenagers with anxiety or severe behavioural difficulties, as well as those who are doing well. Teenagers are also invited to participate in the online survey if their parents agree for them to take part.
