CHAPPY’S CORNER

Last week I had the privilege of attending the Rock & Water program - a program aimed towards social and emotional awareness through physical activities to strengthen the character and encourage individuals to make good choices in different environments. I will be soon hosting this program with students at Maleny High School with another trained staff member.

I continue to offer support to students, teachers, families and also build relationships with community organisations. It is a real privilege to see relationships growing stronger and trust being formed.

I would like to give a huge thanks to Maleny Dairies and Maleny Hot Breads for their continuous support of food for the free breakfast program and every day needs for students. Also a huge thanks to Church On The Rise Maleny for giving their time each week to serve at the breakfast too.

DANCE DEPARTMENT

In the Blink of an Eye

On Saturday the 4th of August, six of our contemporary dancers combined with nine high schools and dance schools across the region to create a collaborative, contemporary dance work. The students have been working with professional dance artists and choreographers for over three months to create this work (on weekends and in lunchtimes!). With only two full cast rehearsals – the final performance on Saturday was “phenomenal”, “inspiring” and “beautiful”. Well done to our dancers that represented Maleny High with such creativity and professionalism.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

Reducing everyday waste: some alternatives to plastic toothbrushes.

Co-written by Anika Sumby and Rhoen Kennedy

The humble toothbrush was first used in the form of frayed twigs over 5000 years ago. The toothbrush is an often-overlooked object in our lives, however it has come a long way since its invention. Now the most common toothbrush is disposable; made from plastic and nylon. This isn’t a good thing.

Over 30 million tonnes of toothbrushes are thrown away annually in Australia. Much of this goes to landfill and even our oceans. Toothbrushes take 400 years to biodegrade and, over time, release toxic chemicals like BPA into the air and surrounding environments. Toxins released by degrading and dumped plastics can damage ecosystems and are a huge risk to us as humans. The manufacture of nylon alone, the material most bristles in toothbrushes are made from, creates huge amounts of nitrous oxide.

The good news is that you can minimise the impact of dental waste on our environment right now by buying and using a non-plastic or reduced impact alternative, instead of the plastic toothbrush commonly used in most households. By using a reduced impact alternative, you will be reducing the amount of plastic and gas pollution in our environment; a small change with big benefits.

To make your transition even easier for you we have found a couple of brands to get you started:

While some of the products listed below may seem expensive when compared to the cost of plastic toothbrushes singularly, the eco-friendly alternative will often work out around the same price if not better.

The Environmental toothbrush TM

This brush got particularly good reviews on several websites and is worth checking out.
“Invented by a Brisbane dentist, The Environmental Toothbrush is a simple solution. Made from bamboo, a natural cellulose fibre, the handles are biodegradable, environmentally sustainable, and do not pollute the environment. The amazing growth and self-renewing ability of bamboo means that deforestation is not necessary either. Even our packaging is bio-degradable.

Our toothbrush is BPA FREE and FAIR TRADED and VEGAN FRIENDLY”

You can learn more or order their product now here, via their website in the link below.

http://environmentaltoothbrush.com.au/

Brush with bamboo

Brush with bamboo’s products are completely plant based in their manufacture, including the bristles. They are USDA approved and vegan. The website (listed below) boasts a long lifespan and compostable packaging.

Learn more at the link below.

https://www.brushwithbamboo.com/about-the-brush/

Bogobrush

The bogobrush company offers two different toothbrushes. A recycled plastic version that comes in three different colours and a ‘naked’ biodegradable option. The bogobrush company also has the option of a customisable subscription. While the products are plastic based, they are definitely less damaging than conventional toothbrushes.

Neem tree farms

Remember those twigs we mentioned earlier? Well, as it turns out, if you are particularly adventurous there is a company that sells neem chew sticks. We would recommend looking at the customer reviews before you purchase them. Although it’s reportedly not as minty as brushing with toothpaste, it apparently removes tooth stains well and ‘toughens and tones the gums’.

Teracycle Colgate Community Garden Challenge

The Teracycle Colgate Community Garden Challenge is a competition for Australian schools, from pre-school to high school. Points are collected from votes and donating old dental care products. The prize is one of five recycled garden sets.

Your plastic dental products are a major pollutant. Toothbrushes, dental floss containers and many similar products are not uncommon items in oceans and landfill. Teracycle is collecting this waste and recycling it into garden sets (which our school has a chance of winning), so it doesn’t end up in the environment.

We need points. You can donate your old products at the student services window. One unit of waste is worth 10 points.

If you go to their website in the link below or google ‘Teracycle Australian School Competition’ you can vote for Maleny State High School. Every vote is a point.

Barung BBQ

Volunteering for Barung Landcare at Maleny’s Wood Expo in May this year has been one of the Environment Committee’s recent activities. Not for the first time, our committee members and several teachers volunteered their time across three days to get out into the community and lend a hand at the busy Barung BBQ – the proceeds from which go towards Barung Landcare and their local environmental work. Although a free burger at the end of the day was a welcomed incentive, everyone was happy to help out!

The committee also took the expo as an opportunity to share our ‘Drastic Plastic’ project with the wider community, and set up a stall advertising our efforts and ideas to reduce plastic use within - and beyond - the school.

Thank you to those committee members and teachers who took time out of their weekend (during a busy time of the school term!) to volunteer at the BBQ, and to those that helped organise the stall.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY CAMPAIGN

Devices help us stay connected, but follow these tips to stay safe:

The Department of Education has recently added safety and wellbeing to our corporate values. This is a symbol of the department's commitment to health, safety and wellbeing for all staff and students.

Information and resources will be circulated to schools and parents to highlight the safe use and charging of devices, such as mobile phones and laptops.

Parents are encouraged to check their child's cords and chargers for damage and to replace faulty equipment.

INTERNATIONAL STUDY TOURS

It’s been a busy start to Term Three, with the arrival of 14 Japanese boys and two teachers on a study tour from Kaisei High School. They had a fantastic time, with a trip to Australia Zoo and attending a service at the local Catholic Church. They will also be doing a day trip to SeaLife and Mooloolaba, a tour of Maleny Dairies, and lots of fun experiences at the school such as a tour of the Ag farm, a dancing class, cooking vegemite scrolls, scientific experiments and 3D printing their very own MSHS key tags. Their visit is also well-timed with an incursion here at the school so that they can partake in a virtual reality Aboriginal Australia Experience.

A huge thanks to the host families who have opened their homes to share with the students, and also to the buddies who have been assisting them around the school. I have had nothing but positive feedback and everyone is enjoying the experience.

Kaisei left us on Monday, 6th August, which gives us a week to take a deep breath and prepare for our second study tour (also from Japan) of 20 boys and girls and 5 staff from Sakura City. They will be with us from the 16th to the 21st August and planning is already well underway on the itinerary for this group as well. I have been inundated with offers for homestay placements and buddies. Thank you to all who have applied.

We have welcomed a new international student this term, Eleonora from Italy. She is with us for Term Three, and has already settled in and loves her time at Maleny. All of the International Student Program (ISP) students were given the opportunity to travel with the study tour group to Mooloolaba and the zoo, where a lot of fun was had!

SPORT NEWS

Interschool Sport:

Year 7:

Our Year Sevens spent Term Two trialling and training for various sports and are now eagerly waiting to commence the interschool competition in week 5. Once the draw has been finalised, coaches will distribute these to the students in their team. Please ensure your student comes to school with their school hat, appropriate footwear and a water bottle every Thursday. Mr Pinney has also distributed permission slips to his rugby league team, and these must be handed back to Mr Pinney ASAP. All boys in the rugby league team must ensure they have their mouthguards at all games.

Good luck to all teams this term!

Year 8:

The Year Eights have just finished their first season of Year Eight interschool sport. We had some great results and hard fought games. Well done Year Eights for being great ambassadors for our wonderful school. Students are now selecting a new sport for the second semester and will learn the necessary skills and tactics for their sport this term, before competing in the interschool competition in Term Four.

Please feel free to contact the PE department should you have any further questions.

2018 Athletics Carnival

The 2018 Maleny State High School Track and Field Athletics Carnival was a huge success this year. Conditions were a little damp in the morning, but with the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky, the days were glorious, allowing for fantastic results in the final house carnival of the year.

Obi started day one in the lead through a strong participation in the pre-carnival events, despite Mellum having the majority of event winners. This lead was slowly cut down over the following two days of competition with only 200 points between first and second place. Bunya rallied on the last day and, at times, it looked like Bunya and Mellum were working together to catch up to the leading house. However, although Mellum and Bunya tried hard, in the end they were unable to catch the all-conquering Obi who sealed a clean sweep of all three Carnivals this year.

ROADCRAFT NEWS

On the 1st and 2nd of August, 23 students (supported by Maleny Apex) attended a driver awareness program called Roadcraft in Gympie.

During these days we learned about the significance of using safe driving techniques. We were put to the test through informative classroom lessons and hands-on practical sessions. Life saving methods included trusting your peripheral vision, becoming aware of surrounding hazards, what to do in emergency situations and the meanings of different road rules.

Overall, everyone involved enjoyed their experiences and learnt many new and valuable lessons. We all strongly recommend that all students in Year Ten or above, no matter your ability, should partake in this exciting and valuable experience. Another group will attend on the 16th and 17th of August.

FROM THE P & C

Today wraps up our Clothing Drive for SunnyKids and we are thrilled to report that it was a phenomenal success!! The outpouring of support for this project is truly overwhelming. Our students, parents, teachers, staff and community members, as a whole, got behind this 100% which is what made it so successful. We just want to thank everyone who has supported this project and donated their time and clothing for the wonderful children of our Sunshine Coast that SunnyKids helps. Without you this would not have been possible.

Father's Day Stall

August 27th to the 31st we will be holding our pop-up Father's Day Stall. Pre-sale's open this week for items and, as an added bonus, if you purchase an item now we will gift wrap it for free. We have several cute types of wrapping for you to choose from. Pre-sale Information will go out soon.

Additionally we would like to thank all the wonderful people who have contributed home made and grown items for our Father's Day stall this year. They will be available for purchase during the week of the 27th to the 31st of August. You really have to come check out the stall this year as we have some pretty unique and spectacular items available for all the amazing Dads on their special day.

Recycle Recycle Recycle

The Environment Committee is an amazing group of students who are lead by an equally amazing teacher. This year they introduced Maleny State High School to TerraCycle's Community Garden Challenge which the entire school and our community is now participating in. The P&C wanted to do their part for the environment by following the lead of this inspirational committee. After doing some research regarding what recycling programs were available, we decided to take on the Beauty Products Recycling Program through TerraCycle. It costs the P&C and the school absolutely nothing to participate in this program. TerraCycle provides TerraCycle points for every package of acceptable recyclables that we ship to them. Each unit of personal care and beauty product packaging that we send to TerraCycle can be redeemed for a payment of AU$0.02 to our school. However this isn't about the TerraCycle points; it's about being part of the solution and helping to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our landfills. We want our children to inherit a beautiful planet and good recycling skills and this is a simple and responsible way to help that cause. The drop-off location is the main administration building of the High School. We are asking everyone to please get behind this recycling program.

Here is a list of the accepted items.

Beauty Products Recycling Program accepted waste:

  1. Cosmetics packaging such as used lipstick and lip gloss, mascara, eye shadow, bronzer, foundation, eyeliner, eye shadow, lip liner, and concealer packaging.
  2. Hair care packaging such as used shampoo and conditioner bottles and caps, hair gel tubes and caps, hair spray and hair treatment packaging.
  3. Skin care packaging such as lip balm, face moisturiser, face and body wash soap dispensers and tubes, body and hand lotion dispensers and tubes and shaving foam packaging.

The P&C is planning our first Annual Maleny Monster Mash which will be Friday the 26th of October. Some people may wonder what a Monster Mash is. Well a Monster Mash can be planned and done many different ways. The one we are having will be a combination of a costume ball, fun house activities for the younger kids, a haunted house walk through for the teens and adults in a separate area from the younger children, a live band, dancing and loads of food and drinks. There will also be costume contests with prizes awarded and loads of raffles for some pretty awesome items. The Monster Mash has something for everyone: Ghoulish Games, Monstrous Music and Freaky Fun. This is an event you don't want to miss.

Maleny Monster Mash - Student Committee

On Monday the 30th of July we opened a student committee for the Monster Mash. The purpose of this committee is to ask the students what they want to see at the Monster Mash. What us adults think is fun or cool for kids and teens can be far different from what they actually think, so who better to go to than the kids themselves. The second part of the student committee is for the kids to be a part of the planning of the Monster Mash and a part of the creative side of the decorating. If you think this Monster Mash Student Committee is something your Maleny State High School Student would like to be involved with, please encourage him or her to come to a meeting. Students from every year are welcome. We will be meeting every Monday during second break in the Hall.

Maleny Monster Mash - Adult Committee

We have a great group of kids on our Student Committee for the Monster Mash and now we need to get together a group of the adults as well. We've had several people interested in being a part of it and now is the time to come on board and help bring some magic to our Maleny Monster Mash. There's nothing we can't get accomplished when we put out minds together. If this sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, please feel free to email the P&C at pandc@malenyshs.eq.edu.au.

UQ - Parenting Teens Survey

The University of Queensland Parenting and Youth Mental Health Survey
(How Do Parent-Adolescent Relationships Influence Youth Mental Health?)

Mental health problems in young people can have negative long-term effects, such as a higher risk of lower educational attainment, joblessness, poor physical health, problematic substance use, and self-injury. Past research has indicated that the parent-child relationship plays an important role in outcomes for young people with mental health problems. Teenagers’ relationships with their parents are important in helping teenagers become more resilient and better able to cope with strong emotions.

This study looks at how teenagers and their parents get along with one another, how parents raise their teenagers, and how this affects teenagers’ wellbeing. Results from this study will tell us more about how positive parent-adolescent relationships can buffer the associations between mental health problems and poor outcomes for young people, and lead to improved self-worth and positive adolescent well-being. It will also help us consider improvements in how parents can be better involved in supporting young people facing mental health difficulties.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for parents of teenagers who:

1) are aged between 11 and 17 years old; and
2) live in Australia.

We are interested in the perspectives of parents of teenagers with anxiety or severe behavioural difficulties, as well as those who are doing well. Teenagers are also invited to participate in the online survey if their parents agree for them to take part.
