ART DEPARTMENT NEWS
OPEN STUDIO A REAL TREAT
It is not every day that you meet your idol, but during the September holidays I was lucky enough to have done just that. As part of the school's professional development program, I attended a workshop held by Wendy Sharpe and Bernard Ollis in Sydney. These two professional working artists opened up their studios to give invaluable tips on painting, work methods, materials strategies and approaches. Both artists have extensive teaching experience and it was a real opportunity for me to learn from their artwork, and ask questions regarding their teaching methods.
A three-hour drawing workshop saw us develop several different compositional viewpoints that are so evident in both Wendy and Bernard’s paintings. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, which will definitely enhance my artistic process, allowing better educational outcomes for students.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS
Terracycle Colgate Community Garden Challenge
The Terracycle Colgate Community Garden Challenge is a competition for Australian schools, from pre-school to high school. Points are collected from votes and by donating old dental care products. The prize is one of five recycled garden sets.
Your plastic dental products are a major pollutant. Toothbrushes, dental floss containers and many similar products are not uncommon items in oceans and landfill. Teracycle is collecting this waste and recycling it into garden sets (which our school has a chance of winning), so it doesn’t end up in the environment.
We need points! You can donate your old products at the Student Services window. One unit of waste is worth 10 points.
If you go to their website at the link below or google ‘Terracycle Australian School Competition’ you can vote for Maleny State High School. Every vote is a point.

Clothing Consumerism is Killing Our Planet:
We’ve come a long way since recent times. No longer are we bound by a tiny, repetitive closet. You can now change your look as fast as the months, or even weeks, go by. But have we really advanced? The Fast Fashion Industry is killing our planet and there are some things you can do to stop it.
The fashion industry is the second biggest polluter in the world, beaten only by oil. Whether it’s the mass amounts of harmful chemicals and resources used in its production, or how much we are throwing away, the demand for style is a monstrous problem only just beginning to rear its head to the general public.
Some chemicals commonly used in clothing production are carcinogens, phthalates and formaldehyde. These chemicals have various functions, all of which are health concerns. Many of the chemicals used in the manufacture and material growth, leach, or are dumped, straight into rivers and other water supplies, often without treatment, causing huge devastation to wildlife and people alike. The Guardian stated that around 70% of rivers and lakes in China are now contaminated. However it’s not just the countries who do the manufacturing and growing that are affected as the chemicals and other waste from the industry can make its way into the ocean, moving around the globe. This is an issue that affects everyone. Some of these chemicals may take a few washes to get out of your clothes, meaning you could be exposed.
Then there is what we throw away, and what doesn’t get to the stores in the first place. Each Australian buys an average of 27 kilograms of textiles a year, making us the second biggest consumers in the world of these products. As a country, 500,000 tonnes of textiles ends up in our land fill annually. Since the 1990s, the amount of clothing we buy has increased by 400 percent. This is a startling figure and can’t be explained away with population growth as it’s been adjusted to account for that.
The good news is that you can do something to make a difference. Yet again, the three Rs come into play here: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. To start with, why not try buying less. Giving to charities and up-cycling your old clothing where you can. Do you want to shop ethically, but don’t want to do the research? Well there are apps you can use and, among them, is good on you. This app is free and looks at the sustainability and ethics of brands, rating them accordingly and suggesting similar brands. Everything you do makes a difference. Whether it makes our future environment better or worse is your decision.
If you would like to know more, or think this issue isn’t something you need to worry about, I would recommend you watch The True Cost, a spectacular documentary available on Netflix that not only addresses the environmental impacts of the industry, but how it’s affecting people and our planet. So I urge you, next time you want to buy clothing, think of the consequences and think of our future.

SPORT NEWS
Interschool Sport
Year 7 Sport:
This term, students are participating in an interclass competition during Sport time on a Thursday afternoon. For the first five weeks of the term a touch football competition will run, before finishing the year with a basketball competition. There’s already some healthy rivalry between classes after the lunchtime futsal competition that was held during Term Three.
It’s important that all students come to school in their full sports uniform on a Thursday, as well as bring their hat and water bottle.
Good luck to all classes.
MALENY HIGH JERSEYS:
Some Year Seven students still haven’t returned their Maleny High jersey from the Term Three interschool competition. To avoid a $50 replacement fee, please ensure your student returns their jersey to the HPE staffroom as soon as possible.
Thank you
Year 8 Interschool Sport:
The Year Eights have started their last round of interschool sport for the year. Maleny has fielded basketball, fast 5 football, tennis, softball, touch football and AFL teams in the competition. Teams have both ‘home’ and ‘away’ games on a Wednesday afternoon for the remainder of the term. On the weeks that students travel to other schools, buses return to Maleny High by 3 pm for normal transport home. Sport is a wonderful opportunity for students to make new connections, improve fitness levels and learn new skills, as well as develop team spirit and display sportspersonlike behaviour.
Good luck to all teams. Go Maleny!

Recycle Recycle Recycle

The P&C is trying to do our part for the environment. We have been participating in the Beauty Products Recycling Program through Terracycle. It costs the P&C and the school absolutely nothing to participate in this program. Terracycle provides Terracycle Points for every package of acceptable recyclables that we ship to them. Each unit of personal care and beauty product packaging that we send to Terracycle can be redeemed for a payment of AU$0.02 to our school. However this isn't about the Terracycle points, it's about being part of the solution and helping to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our landfills. We want our children to inherit a beautiful planet and good recycling skills, so this is a simple and responsible way to help that cause. The drop-off location is the main administration building of the High School. We are asking everyone to please get behind this recycling program.

Here is a list of the accepted items:
Beauty Products Recycling Program accepted waste:
- Cosmetic packaging such as used lipstick and lip gloss, mascara, eye shadow, bronzer, foundation, eyeliner, eye shadow, lip liner, and concealer packaging.
- Hair care packaging such as used shampoo and conditioner bottles and caps, hair gel tubes and caps, hair spray and hair treatment packaging.
- Skin care packaging such as lip balm, face moisturiser, face and body wash soap dispensers and tubes, body and hand lotion dispenser and tubes, and shaving foam packaging.

SKI TRIP 2018

Over the first week of the spring school holidays 34 students and 4 teachers travelled to Perisher for 5 days of skiing or snowboarding. The Maleny High School Ski Trip has become an integral part of the extra-curriculum options for senior students. It provides an opportunity for students to develop a range of personal and group skills in an environment which many students would otherwise not experience. It takes advantage of learning in environments outside the school setting, and has proven to be valuable motivational component in broadening the education of our students. The students in attendance were an absolute pleasure.
The Ski Trip contributes significantly to the values and interactions students have experienced in their Care Class programs. The Ski Trip challenges, and has a focus on the nature and importance of human functioning. An unfamiliar environment tested the students’ self-reliance and enabled the students to develop their own identity. It also enabled the students to focus on their relationship with their peers and teachers. Students learnt about, and developed the knowledge and skills needed, to function effectively in group situations.
Students:
- Participated in a creative, challenging and enjoyable activity.
- Learnt new physical skills. Practised and improved their performance by working both individually and in small groups.
- Were responsible for themselves and each other.
- Understood the challenges and risks involved in an unfamiliar environment and how to minimise such risks.
Thank you to all teachers involved in making this trip a huge success.
Expressions of Interest are now open for the 2019 Ski Trip. See Mrs Fox in N Block staffroom for a form. The 2019 trip is currently open to Year 11 and 12 students in 2019, and will be capped at 30 students, so get in now so you don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity.

NEPAL ORPHANS HOME VISIT TO MALENY

The September holidays were a busy time for the participants of our Nepal humanitarian group that travelled to Kathmandu last Easter holidays. Six of the staff from the Nepal Orphans Home, four of whom are children who were raised in the orphans’ home, arrived in Queensland on the 26th of September. We spent a wonderful 18 days with our new friends. During their stay we visited many iconic Australian places here on the coast. The ocean was a revelation for them as some had never seen the sea before. Watching them negotiate the waves was simultaneously scary and humorous. The Australia Zoo experience was amazing as we were interviewed by all the T.V. news stations and met the usual suspects: koala, echidna and python, up close and personal.
The most rewarding thing from the visit was being able to reinforce the connections, the close bonds and friendships, which we had begun to grow in Kathmandu. We had an opportunity to explore our different perspectives in more detail and see our own world through fresh eyes. The most important thing we all learnt was that cultural differences do not have the power to divide us, and that our life is enriched if we find the capacity to acknowledge that the most valuable things in life are not things, but are people.
We have approval from Ms Stewart to mount another excursion to the same charity in Easter 2020 and in the next few weeks expressions of interest from students who are currently in grade nine and above will be called for by the Himaleny team here at school. If you have an interest, feel free to contact Robyn Jones, Ashleigh Ebenezer or Natasha Collis.

Namaste.
