PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Term 3 August

Staffing:

There have been a number of staffing changes since the last school newsletter. At the end of Term Two we farewelled Mr Brian Wilkinson (Deputy Principal) and Mr Bill Holland (Maths Teacher). However, Mr Wilkinson returned for a few weeks to cover for Mr Fitton (Deputy Principal) during his leave. Also, Mr Glenn McIntosh has arrived from Meridan State College and has made a very positive and immediate impact upon the school. Glenn brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to the Senior school.

Mr Brad Patten has come from Noosa District State High school and is filling the position of Science Head of Department while Mrs Dagmar Ryan is on long service leave. Mr Mark Camman is on long service leave as well, and Ms Jo Henderson will be acting in his place. Ms Shelley Le Vesconte is our relieving Visual Art teacher while Ms Kerry Jones is on long service leave. Mr Graham Glover is taking Mr Holland's Mathematics position. Ms Chippendale is taking Ms Elisha Fox's position while she is on maternity leave. Ms Jemma Pollari is also on maternity leave, so Mr John Dighton is taking some of her classes.

We welcome all our new staff to Maleny State High School and hope they find working at our school a very memorable time in their teaching careers.

Report Cards:

Semester One reports cards were emailed out to parents at the start of Week Two. If you have not received your student's report card yet, please contact the school so that a hard copy can be mailed home.

Student Assistance:

Junior School Year Level Coordinators open up a classroom every lunch time to assist students with their assignment work. This classroom is known as the 'RRR Room'. A number of teachers also help students at these times. If your child is experiencing assignment difficulties, please encourage them to use the RRR room.

Many Senior School teachers offer a number of lunchtime tutorials to assist students with their work. Students are encouraged to use these tutorials if they need any help. Report cards are currently being analysed. Any Senior students who have been identified as 'at risk' of not attaining enough credits to earn their QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) are being interviewed. Individual plans are being made and put into place so that students have the best opportunities to graduate with their QCE.

Time to Celebrate:

The Year Level Coordinators are using student reporting and attendance data to identify those who have achieved high academic results, earned positive effort and behaviour results, and met the school target of 92% attendance. In Year Eight alone, over one hundred emails have been sent to parents informing them of their child's success, and congratulating students on their conduct during Semester One. We celebrated and acknowledged these students' efforts with a morning tea. Well done to all of these students from Years 7 to 12. It is fabulous to see so many students attending and achieving.

Athletics Carnival:

Another successful team effort was made by Mellum who won our recent Athletics carnival. Many students had fun participating in the events and the dance-off competitions. Our visiting Japanese students also participated and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thank you to Mr Homewood and Ms Rush who organised and ran this successful carnival. Our very active Senior Graduation committee was selling popcorn and slushies to raise funds to reduce the cost of their Formal tickets. This committee has been very pro-active in the lead-up to their formal and is working hard to make their evening a memorable one.

School Review:

I presented the Executive Summary of the School Review to the P&C last term. This summary has been placed on our school website for all interested people to read. One of the recommendations made was that the school looks for ways to work with the Leaders of the school. I wasted no time in taking my Leadership Team away for a couple of days during Week Two. Over this time we worked with a regional coach to explore frameworks that will assist us to drive and achieve successful future initiatives.

The Leadership Team will use the remainder of the term to further build upon these recommendations to develop a four year strategic plan of continual school improvement. Any interested parents who would like to be a part of this strategic planning are welcome to contact me. I would be happy to work with parents on sharing our school data so that they can have input into the future direction of the school. If interested please contact me on: dstew1@eq.edu.au.

Kasei Study Tour:

Ten young men have arrived from Kasei, Japan for their annual two week study tour. These students are being hosted by our families and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the families who are welcoming these students into their homes. The international student program is a very positive program that reinforces tolerance, cultural diversity and understanding. In a time where we hear of such terrible acts of violence occurring across the globe, this is our opportunity to build peaceful friendships that will extend over a lifetime. We need to ensure that our young people continue to look for peaceful solutions, and having visiting students from Japan, Italy, France, Norway and Brazil (to name just a few) is a way that we can reach out to other young people around the world and establish a lasting legacy. I would like to thank Ms Su Carbery, Mrs Roz Presnell and Mrs Tania Mundt for their work in organising this study tour.

We have also managed to employ Ms Yoshiko Sadamoto, a native-speaking Japanese teacher, for part of Term Three to assist our students in their language development.

New Senior Program for 2018: teaching staff are keen to keep up-to-date with the latest events regarding the implementation of the new Senior programs being delivered in 2018. Ms Cath Gray has already spent weekends contributing to the writing of the new Syllabus documents for Dance and Biology. She has been able to in-service our staff on how these differ from our current models. Mrs Peta Fredericks and Mr Brad Patten have also been trained as external markers for Senior English and Maths B. Having these staff trial external marking provides valuable information and helps to prepare our staff for these new Senior programs. I am reassured by the professionalism and enthusiasm of my staff, and know that we will be well prepared and ready for this new paradigm.

Until our next edition, take care of yourself and your loved ones

Regards,
Deborah Stewart

AGRICULTURE NEWS

SUNSHINE COAST AG SHOW

On June 9 & 10, the Maleny State High School cattle show team had a very successful couple of days at the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show. This show required participants to take their preparation and showing skills to the next level, which they did brilliantly.

Results from the show were:

(Samara actually broke the record for this, scoring 99 out of a possible 100 points)
Junior Handler 7-14 years – 4th Emily Ikin, 5th Riley Lewis

Junior Handler 15 & over – 3rd Samara Clements

Some of the cattle results:

British male under 12 months – 1st Emily Ikin & Maleny High Lincoln
(This pair then won Reserve Junior Champion British Male)

British male over 30 months – Riley Lewis & Maleny High Juggernaut
(This combination then took out Senior Champion British Male and then Grand Champion British Male)

Congratulations to all the students for their success over the weekend.

NEW LAMBS FOR FARM

MSHS Ag has two new members at the farm, born Friday afternoon (22 July 2016). Poor mum had a difficult birth, as two heads and three legs were all coming out at the same time. Vet assistance was required to help deliver the little twins, basically going elbow deep, pushing one back and bringing them out one by one. However the little family is doing well in the maternity wing of the farm.

HUMANITIES NEWS

Year 12 Geography Stadia Tour

With the population of South East Queensland predicted to exceed 4 million by the year 2020, there is a growing demand from the public for a sports and entertainment stadium with a seating capacity of over 80 000 to be built in Brisbane. As part of their Year 12 Geography course on Planning Places, students have identified three potential sites for this new super-stadium – RNA Showgrounds, Roma St Parklands and redeveloping Suncorp Stadium.

On the 7th June students were able to take part in guided tours of both the Roma St Parkland and Suncorp Stadium so they could gain first-hand knowledge of each of these sites as well as examine a range of issues related to stadium construction and design; movement of patrons into and out of the precinct and the stadium; and the provision of infrastructure such as water, electricity, waste management.

The excursion greatly enhanced the students' understanding of planning principles and will assist students in completing their assessment this term.

Out thanks go to the staff at both Suncorp and Roma St Parklands for taking the time to conduct these tours and for the information provided.

SPORT NEWS

2016 Track and Field Carnival

All the planning under the sun (pun intended) couldn't have produced two more wonderful days in which to hold the 2016 Maleny State High School Track and Field Carnival. Conditions were a little cool in the morning, but with the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky, the days were glorious. This provided a wonderful vibe for contesting the third major sporting carnival trophy.

It was a year for breaking records, with eighteen old records getting the chop; making way for the new generation of athletes. Some of these records dated back as far as last century! A full list of the new records appears below.

It seems to be a tradition at Maleny High that the house points shuffle many times over the days. Very close results, in recent years, has indicated the level of intense competition, and this year was not to be any different. Mellum began the final day in first place on points, with a small margin to Obi, and Bunya not too far back in third place. A progressive points update midway through the day saw this change, with the lead going to Obi, who looked to be making a very strong surge to the line right when it counted.

After the running of the relays and the Gift Race, and a few scrambled eggs from a novelty event, all points had been tallied. The results were announced. Unfortunately for Obi, they didn't continue their run to the line at full pace, and with a small showing in the relays, they lost their grip on the trophy. Mellum fought back hard taking first place, and Bunya put in a superb effort to snatch second, knocking Obi down to third.

2016 House Results

1st – Mellum 2609pts

SUNSHINE COAST TECHNICAL TRADE TRAINING CENTRE

YEAR 7 CORNER

Hello all. Term 3 is fully underway. By the time you get this it will be Week 5 and your child should be looking ahead to the assessment for the term.

https://malenyshs.eq.edu.au/Curriculum/Testingandassessment/Pages/Testingandassessment.aspx

Appropriate Use of Technology - In keeping with our Junior School Philosophy of Resilience, Self-Reliance and Responsibility, we recently had a visit from the Department's Cyber Safety presenters. Our students learnt about Cyber-bullying and their online footprint. Some key notes from the presentation:

  • Once it's out there, it's out there for good. Pictures and even words can impact upon a person years after posting them.
  • Think about how you present yourself online. Employers are increasingly looking at the online profiles of candidates to see the person behind the interview.
  • If you wouldn't say it in person, don't put it online. It is illegal to cause offence online even if the person offended isn't the intended recipient of the original communication.
  • Be careful of geotagging in pictures. There have been cases of people locating individuals from meta-data gleaned from pictures online.

Please have a chat with your child about their online presence. Also have a chat about phone usage at school. I've been talking to the students about the responsible use of technology. The rule at school is that they must wait for explicit permission from a teacher before using a device in class.

Awards – Many of you will have received emails congratulating you and your child on a job well done in Semester 1. Well done to those families with attendance above 92% and to those students who don't rely upon extensions for their assignments.

As always, my door is always open to discuss these matters. You may reach me at acerd2@eq.edu.au with any questions or ring 5499-8126

Have a great remainer of term,

Adrian Cerda
Year 7 Coordinator

COMMUNITY NOTICES

MINDFULNESS

If you are like me, you may have noticed the word 'mindfulness' popping up increasingly often in the media. Mindfulness as a concept and a practice is frequently misunderstood. So what exactly is mindfulness, and is it something which we can embrace?

Mindfulness has been defined as "paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally" (John Kabat-Zinn). In our busy, complex, social media-ed world our brains are on chronic over-drive from waking to sleeping, and then some. Mindfulness provides strategies which allow us to focus on responding skilfully in the moment rather than being caught up in a jumble of thoughts based in the future or the past.

Many ills in our lives are caused or fed by over-thinking - getting lost in the whirlpool of our own unhelpful thoughts and feelings. When we become more present in the here and now, we become less tangled up in thoughts and feelings which sabotage our health and well-being. Mindfulness utilises a focus on the breath and the body, exactly as it is, to anchor us in the present. This is useful because our breath and our body are always with us so the anchor can be accessed anytime, anywhere.

Research into the neuroscience of mindfulness is revealing a myriad of benefits in the areas of emotional regulation, concentration and empathy. In addition, there is evidence to suggest that immune function is improved through mindfulness practice. Mindfulness techniques are currently being prescribed by GPs and psychologists, and mindfulness is currently considered one of the most effective strategies for reducing anxiety and depression. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that mindfulness is as useful for children and adolescents as it is for adults.

So, is mindfulness something to embrace? In essence, mindfulness is a highly useful, evidence-based strategy for stress management and general well-being. Mindfulness is not a magic bullet, and there are many other health giving strategies which complement its practice. In our frantic existence however, mindfulness offers the potential to improve our well-being through becoming more connected with the present moment, ourselves and others.

This was a challenge that involved 'old school' creative photography – no digital mastery.

Well done Paige. Enjoy your $100 cash prize.
