PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Retirement of Mr Ian Fitton
After twenty years as Deputy Principal at Maleny State High School, Mr Fitton has decided to retire. ‘Thank you’ does not seem adequate to recognise the decades of service that Mr Fitton has given to the Maleny High community. Mr Fitton has cared for the well-being of many students in this community and provided us with his patience, experience and empathy. We all wish him good health and happiness for his retirement. Thank you Mr Fitton.
Canteen and Uniform Shops
During the recent P&C AGM, it was ratified that the school would take over the running of these two businesses to help ease the load that is expected of our volunteers. Our P&C for 2018 (and beyond) will focus on being the ‘parent’ voice and organising more fun, social fundraising opportunities for our school. With this new direction I hope that parents will come along and take an active interest and role in their child/ren’s school.
My thanks to the outgoing President, Tia Law, who has been heavily involved with P&Cs for all of her children’s lives. This year is the first time that Tia has not had a child in schooling (for twenty years). Many parents are sharing your joy Tia, but I know you loved being involved with P&C Qld.
Fundraising for New Curtains
When report cards were emailed out on the last day of last term, the P&C was asking families to donate $40 towards the replacement of our 22 year-old hall curtains. All donations over $2 are tax deductable. I hope families can get behind this fundraising event so that we can, perhaps, showcase our new curtains for our school musical in June. This letter has been reproduced here for your information. Over $1000 has been already been donated, so thank you to those parents and families who have already contributed.
New-Look Report Cards
During the Parent/Teacher interviews at the start of this term, parents received detailed report cards that were developed using the TrackEd software program. The parents who received this new report card gave positive feedback on the additional information that was provided. Families who were not able to attend the interviews will receive their reports this coming week. Please give us your feedback via the link below.

Reboot
A new program has been launched this term called ‘Reboot’. This program is helping our young people with their wellbeing by providing strategies for developing resilience and making better decisions. I hope to see students and staff using these strategies to help our young people.
Cross Country
People of Maleny may have been wondering what happened last Friday when students were seen covered in coloured powder. We incorporated a ‘Colour Run’ into our cross country. Students found it fun to run through clouds of powder. We moved our cross-country event to the Maleny Show Grounds so that every student could participate in this event, and no one would be left on the sidelines due to physical disabilities. Thank you to Mr Pinney and Ms Hindle for organising this event. Special thanks to Ms Riggs who organised the ‘Colour Run’ part of the cross-country.
Year 10 Subject Selection Information Evening
Mr McIntosh and I will be running an information evening on Tuesday, 8 May from 6pm in H01 for parents of current Year 9 and 10 students. This evening will outline the changes that will be implemented next year as the new SATE (Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance) and QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) system is implemented. We would love to see as many parents and students as possible in attendance.
We are already in Week Three! The term is certainly flying by.
Until the next edition, take care.

Office Hours
FROM THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT
Eliza Shirley and Freya Hamilton-Barry performed their monologues at the Sunshine Coast Drama Festival on Saturday the 28th of April. Eliza received a bronze commendation and Freya received a Silver commendation. Both students should be very proud of their efforts as they represented our school with passion and flair on Kawana State High School’s stage to an audience of over 80 people.

ENGLISH COMMUNICATION
On the 22nd of May the Year 12 English Communication students will be running a 'Maleny Market Day' as part of their ‘Business of Recreation’ assessment. Hot food, snacks, drinks and crafts will be available for students to purchase during second break. Some stalls will be organising a pre-order and pre-pay service in the next week, others will be accepting cash on the day.
Students are allocating a significant amount of time, effort, and creativity into this task as they prepare for their assessment, and are looking forward to receiving your business (and feedback).
If you have any queries, please forward them to Isabel Riggs at irigg3@eq.edu.au.
Thank you for supporting our students.

FLEXI SCHOOL NEWS
We are already one term down in the school year and the 20 members of our learning community have settled in well. 2018 looks to be a wonderful year, and we are actively building on the successes that we had in 2017. In November we said goodbye to five Year 12 graduates, all of whom successfully obtained their full Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). A 100% QCE ranking is a first for Flexi and we are extremely proud of this achievement. In addition to completing their schooling, our Year 12s also completed paid Cert. 3 Traineeships in Business, and a Cert IV in Legal Studies.
We are very proud of all our past students and enjoy seeing them and hearing their stories when they come to visit us.
The success of our students is directly linked to community support and involvement. Without the encouragement and opportunities that we are given, our outcomes would be significantly reduced. This year we are grateful to the following businesses that are offering our hard working students paid traineeships. Nooreen at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is supporting Sammalen and Grace to complete their Cert. 3 Community Services. Jenny at The Curry Hut is supporting Alicia to complete her Cert. 3 Hospitality. Nat and Ash at the Conondale Store are supporting Levana in her Cert 3. Retail. Virginia at Maleny Medical Centre is supporting Tiarni in her Cert. 3 Medical Administration. Tanisha is completing a Cert. 3 Business and Chelsea is completing her Cert. 3 Physical Fitness and Training at MF Martial Arts. Brouhaha Brewery is employing Sebastian and he is completing his Cert. 4 Commercial Cookery.
These fantastic training opportunities mean that students graduating from the Maleny Flexi School will leave with valuable work experience, a local support network and a full Queensland Certificate of Education that comprises a combination of the following VET subjects:
Cert. 1 Work Life Skills
Cert. 1 Information Design Media and Technology
Cert. 2 Foundation Life Skills
Cert. 2 Visual Art
We work with external training organisations such as 2Study and this is the second year that they will deliver a dual Cert. 2 Hospitality and Tourism and Cert. 2 Hair and Make-Up at the Flexi School. We are also supported by IFYS and their ‘Get Set for Work’ program, which runs from the Neighbourhood Centre. The Maleny Lions Club have offered our students the opportunity to participate in their Duke of Edinburgh Award. This is a fantastic international program that focuses on self-development and attainment.
We can’t survive without the ongoing support of our volunteers. This year we have a wonderful team. Kitty Dawkins is a past student and a loved member of the community who shares her time with us on Thursday. Emma Oxley, a past student, was on placement at the Flexi School in Term One and is completing her Teacher Support qualification. Steve Thompson comes to the Flexi School to share his creativity and skill. In Term One we made wands and they were magical! In January we made friends with Lyndal Regent, a youth worker who is volunteering her time and expertise with us and has already proved herself indispensable when it comes to providing the support that our learning community needs to thrive. John Mays used to be a teacher at Flexi for over 15 years. After his retirement in 2014, he continues to support us two days a week. We rely on his extraordinary expertise and wisdom as an educator and would not be able to function without him, and he brings us cake… EVERY WEEK!

Things are looking good in 2018, so here’s to another fantastic year at Maleny Flexi School!
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Term two has been quiet on the international front so far, with our long term students well-settled and no Study Tours booked. We farewelled our French student Zoe, who has been with us for three terms and Tony, our Spanish connection, will be leaving us at the end of this term after a year of study here at Maleny High. It is always difficult to say goodbye to these kids who become so much a part of everyday school life.

In term 3 we have a Study Tour booking with Kaisei High School for 24th July – 6th August, and are awaiting details from EQI for Sakura City Junior High School. Both of these schools are from Japan and have been visiting Maleny for many years. I will be in touch with my regular host families soon, but if you have never hosted an international student before and think you may be interested, this is a perfect opportunity to “test the water” and I’d love to hear from you! Host families are renumerated, and the non-financial benefits are plentiful also. You will have 24/07 support during the visit.
Students are also encouraged to nominate as a “school buddy” for these students during their time with us. You don’t need to be hosting a student to apply. If you study Japanese, what an amazing opportunity to practise what you have learnt! Students are able to participate in many of the fun activities and feasts, and your contribution will factor towards leadership positions in the Senior year levels. Please see Ms Presnell or myself in N Block staffroom if you are interested.

INTERSCHOOL SPORT
Year 7 Sport
Our Year Sevens have just selected a new sport for the winter season. Students will train or trial on a Thursday afternoon for the remainder of the term. This gives students the ability to learn the necessary skills required for the sport, as well as develop a team code and culture amongst their group. The interschool competition for the season runs in Term 3. If your student has selected rugby league, please ensure the permission form is returned to Mr Pinney ASAP.
Year 8 Sport
Students have begun the interschool competition for Wednesday afternoon sport. Week One was a wash out, but we have our fingers crossed for plenty of sunshine for the remainder of the term!! Your student should have received the draw for the competition from their sport coach. When students travel to play ‘away’ games, buses return to school by 3 pm for normal transport home. Please ensure your student is prepared for Sport each Wednesday.
Good luck to all teams this term! Go Maleny!
If you have any further questions, please contact the HPE Department on 5499 8129.
X-COUNTRY
We held our X-country last Friday with a colour run included. This meant that students were sprayed with coloured powder during their run. The colours were non toxic and safe to use. Students had a great time. Not sure about the parents who had to wash their clothes.
Please find attached photos from the day.
